SoftLayer, an IBM Company, has begun shipping new bare-metal servers that are billed by the hour. The new hourly bare-metal servers are single tenant servers connecting directly to SoftLayer's private global network. Customers may choose from four base configurations with the CentOS, Red Hat, FreeBSD, or Ubuntu operating system installed. IBM says the base configuration is deployed within 30 minutes, after which the server may be further customized with additional OS or application installations.

Logentries, a cloud log management and analytics service, has introduced a new solution intended to help Dev and IT Ops proactively monitor, troubleshoot and resolve production system issues in real time. "It's particularly important to not only monitor errors in your logs, but proactively recognize where there has been a shift in system behavior," said Trevor Parsons, co-founder and chief scientist for Logentries.

North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) is deploying Entrinsik Informer as its new reporting solution to allow end users to create and run their own reports, and leverage dashboard creation and data analysis capabilities. In evaluating new solutions, NIACC sought to implement a reporting solution that could be set up to easily answer questions as they arise; and provide the ability to join tables and views in the background giving the end user access to more data with less reliance on technology services.

China Telecom Corporation Limited and IBM have entered into a 3-year agreement to help small and medium businesses implement SAP cloud-based applications. The announcement is a key step in the Chinese cloud computing market that will provide one of the fastest growing segments within China greater access to cloud resources, said D.C. Chien, general manager and chief executive officer, IBM Greater China Group.

To help companies evaluate big data systems, a new benchmark has been launched by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC). TPCx-HS is a major achievement for two reasons, noted Raghunath Nambiar, chairman of the TPCx-HS committee, and a distinguished engineer at Cisco. It is the first vendor-neutral benchmark focused on big data systems - which have become a critical part of the enterprise IT ecosystem. TPCx-HS is also the first Express-class benchmark issued by the TPC.

Violin Memory, a provider of all-flash storage arrays and appliances delivering application solutions for the enterprise, has introduced data deduplication and compression capabilities in its Concerto 2200 solution. According to Violin Memory, the new Concerto 2200 array update with inline deduplication and compression gives customers maximum storage efficiency, with deduplication rates commonly between 6:1 and 10:1.

Oracle's Exadata Database Machine X4-8 has been enhanced to provide large performance and memory increases compared to the previous generation. Hardware enhancements include 50% more database compute cores, using the Intel Xeon E7 v2 15-core processors, and up to 6TB of memory per compute node for a total of 12TB per rack. The result, says Oracle, is that the Exadata Database Machine X4-8 can consolidate hundreds of databases and can run massive databases entirely in-memory.

With the introduction of Logi Vision for HP Vertica, Vertica is now integrated with the complete suite of Logi Analytics solutions, including Logi's business information platform, Logi Info. Splice Machine, a provider of a Hadoop RDBMS, has added a $3 million extension to its Series B financing provided by venture capital firm Correlation Ventures, along with database industry leaders Roger J. Sippl and Roger Bamford. The new funding adds to the initial $15 million Series B investment from Interwest Partners and Mohr Davidow Ventures (MDV), bringing the total round to $18 million.

VoltDB, provider of an in-memory NewSQL database, is now participating in the IBM Cloud Marketplace, which combines IBM's capabilities-as-a-service and those of partners and third-party vendors. Just months after the massive data breaches of the 2013 holiday season, a newly discovered data breach is again shining a spotlight on the need for better enterprise data security and the fact that not enough is being done to secure critical customer data. The most recent headlines involve a Russian crime ring and 1.2 billion user names and passwords as well as at least 500 million email addresses.
