The expense to design and manufacture robots is rapidly declining. Big data, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and deep learning, coupled with componentized software and near-unlimited processing power, are enabling new classes of robotics never possible before. The graphical processing unit has evolved far from its humble video game beginnings into a system of such processing power that a microsecond is considered to be unacceptably high latency. Large fortunes are being generated as these companies are developing into entities that resemble the great figures and even empires of antiquity. When considering the technology industry as a whole, it is understandable if we wonder if we are witnessing the inception of a new colossus.

AI will only succeed if it is working in partnership with human intelligence, and only humans can provide the business context that gives AI value. The gist of the keynote was autopilot flies better than humans, autonomous cars will be safer, so why would we not do the same for our databases (remove the human error)? What is the validity of this line of thought, and how might it be implemented? What does an autonomous database look like?

There's a surprising trick for greatly increasing the chances of real impact, true success with many types of machine learning systems, and that is "do the logistics correctly and efficiently."   That sounds like simple advice - it is - but the impact can be enormous. If the logistics are not handled well, machine learning projects generally fail to deliver practical value. In fact, they may fail to deliver at all. But carrying out this advice may not seem simple at all.

IBM plans to make a 10-year, $240 million investment to create the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The lab will carry out fundamental artificial intelligence research and seek to propel scientific breakthroughs that unlock the potential of AI. The collaboration aims to advance AI hardware, software and algorithms related to deep learning and other areas, increase AI's impact on industries, such as health care and cybersecurity, and explore the economic and ethical implications of AI on society. IBM's investment in the lab will support research by IBM and MIT scientists.

There are plenty of pronouncements about artificial intelligence—both in terms of the miracles it can produce and the threat it poses to humanity. But according to Ali Ghodsi, co-founder and CEO of Databricks, there is actually a "1% problem" in that there are a handful of companies such as Google, Amazon, and a few others that are actually accomplishing their goals with it. AI has vast potential but some of the claims, as well as the fears, are overstated and a little premature right now, he contends.

Typical big data analytics are incapable of painting the full picture of consumer behaviors and often fail to quickly provide complete insights. When this happens, marketers end up with broad insights that miss the mark when translated into real-world advertisements and campaigns.
