EMC, which enables businesses and service providers to transform their operations and deliver IT as a service, is acquiring Virtustream to form its new managed cloud services business. The all-cash transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2015, subject to customary closing conditions, is valued at approximately $1.2 billion. Virtustream brings to the EMC portfolio a managed cloud software and services capability — whether on or off premise — which EMC also intends to incorporate into the Federation Enterprise Hybrid Cloud Solution.
ERPScan, a provider of SAP security solutions, is entering a partnership with IBM to offer a security solution certified to work with IBM QRadar. This allows a comprehensive approach to security analysis of Oracle and SAP applications, such as SAP NetWeaver ABAP, SAP NetWeaver JAVA, SAP HANA, SAP BusinessObjects, SAP Mobile, Oracle Database, and Oracle PeopleSoft, possible.
Pentaho is now offering support for integration with SAP HANA and Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR). Dubbed Pentaho 5.4, available now, the solution offers new capabilities that build on a pragmatic and future-proofed platform for big data orchestration and analytics at scale.
SAP is releasing service pack 10 (SPS10) for the SAP HANA platform, and version 2.2 of SAP's Predictive Analytics solution. SPS10 delivers new capabilities that will help customers connect with the Internet of Things (IoT) at enterprise scale, manage big data more effectively, further extend high availability of data across the enterprise, and develop new applications. SAP Predictive Analytics version 2.2 extends the power of predictive analytics by enabling customers to get predictive insights on ultra-wide datasets to help make fast and accurate predictions in real time.
MapR Technologies, Inc., a provider of a distribution for Apache Hadoop, is including Apache Drill 1.0 in the MapR Distribution. Drill is a schema-free SQL query engine for Hadoop, NoSQL, and cloud storage. According to MapR, the partner ecosystem is embracing Apache Drill, and a range of companies, including SAP, are working closely with MapR and the Drill community to interoperate BI tools with Drill through standard ODBC/JDBC connectivity.
Think About It
Despite a growing need for real-time information, only about one-quarter of big data projects result in tangible success, according to a survey by Capgemini and EMC, that was explored by Andreas Schmitz in a recent blog on the SAP website. Seventy-three percent of the 1,000 decision makers who responded to the survey declared their big data projects failures because of the lengthy process, sometimes taking months to get the information they need.
