Pentaho Corporation, a provider of big data analytics and data integration software, has formed an alliance with Splunk Inc. to provide a big data analytics solution that enables business users to analyze machine data that is generated by websites, applications, servers, storage, network, mobile and other devices, including system sensors. The combined solution, Pentaho Business Analytics and Splunk Enterprise, makes it possible for business users to utilize Pentaho to rapidly visualize and gain additional insights from Splunk’s machine data platform with their existing in-house skills
According to the vendors, users can download Pentaho Business Analytics for Splunk Enterprise from Splunkbase, to be able to combine Splunk machine data with a variety of other traditional Pentaho data sources. The bi-directional integration lets business users access, explore, analyze and visualize machine data to extract real, actionable information.
As a result of the new alliance, Splunk customers will have the ability to use Pentaho’s platform to do two things, said Eddie White, executive vice president, business development at Pentaho, in an interview. They will be able to use Pentaho’s data integration capability to move data from other data sources onto the Splunk platform to consolidate data from relational sources, including Hadoop, NoSQL or proprietary databases. “We have a very rich suite of connectivity from a data integration perspective and we allow the Splunk customers to get more value from their Splunk database by migrating data there from other siloes.”
In addition, said White, Penthaho has business users as well as IT users using its BI, while the Splunk user tends to be the IT department which is less demanding on in terms of what the user experience is like. By doing this integration, business users can access and explore data that is sitting in Splunk in the kind of format and visualizations that they are accustomed to. “They get all that from one platform. That is why the business user will care. It is about more value from their investment in Splunk, and more of the enterprise users, particularly on the business side, are able to interact in a meaningful way with the data. That is really what is behind what we are doing.”
