Hortonworks Scoops Up SequenceIQ to Accelerate Hadoop Deployments into the Cloud

Hortonworks, a contributor to and provider of enterprise Apache Hadoop, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire SequenceIQ. SolutionIQ provides rapid deployment tools for Hadoop, to deliver a consistent and automated solution for launching on-demand Hadoop clusters in the cloud or to any environment that supports Docker containers.

"The SequenceIQ team has developed key tools that allow enterprises to efficiently automate the launching of Hadoop clusters on any cloud infrastructure platform across the entire lifecycle, from proof-of-concept to development, test and production," said Rob Bearden, chief executive officer of Hortonworks. "This acquisition complements our strategy of providing enterprise customers the broadest choice of consumption options for Hortonworks Data Platform, from on-premise deployments to cloud architectures."

The transaction is expected to close in Q2. Upon close, Hortonworks said it will incorporate SequenceIQ technology into the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) and then transition the technology to the Apache Software Foundation.

Founded in February 2014, SequenceIQ has developed products such as Cloudbreak, an elastic and cloud agnostic deployment solution for HDP clusters, and Periscope, which provides policy-based auto-scaling for multi-tenant HDP clusters. The company has experience contributing to existing Apache Software Foundation projects and innovating within the open source community, best exemplified by the seamless integration of Cloudbreak and Periscope with Apache Ambari and Apache Hadoop YARN.

According to Hortonworks, as enterprises increasingly adopt Hadoop as the foundation of their centralized data architectures, there is an increasing need to simplify and better control the deployment of new Hadoop clusters. Addressing this challenge, it says, SequenceIQ allows organizations to deploy secure and elastic HDP clusters in a consistent manner across the entire analytics application lifecycle, and allows customers to launch HDP into any major cloud platform, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and OpenStack. Adding increased value, SequenceIQ also optimizes these deployments via policy-based autoscaling that expands and contracts clusters based upon actual usage metrics.
