Teradata has introduced the Teradata Database 15 with a new software product called Teradata QueryGrid that provides virtual compute capability within and beyond the Teradata Unified Data Architecture. Cloudera has closed on a new round of funding for $160 million which will be used to further drive the enterprise adoption of and innovation in Hadoop and promote the enterprise data hub (EDH) market; support geographic expansion into Europe and Asia; expand its services and support capabilities; and scale the field and engineering organizations. It's to ignore the societal and economic factors that—for good or ill—ultimately determine how big data gets used. In 2013, two major shifts in the big data landscape occurred, which can be described as the Battle Over Persistence and the Race for Access Hill. The acceptance of leveraging the strengths of various database technologies in an optimized Modern Data Platform has more or less been resolved, but the recognition of a single point of access and context is next. Likewise, the race for access will continue well into 2014.
