Physician Practice Uses InterSystems Ensemble to Interface With Chicago Regional Health Information Exchange

InterSystems Corporation, has announced that Pronger Smith Medical Care rolled out InterSystems Ensemble as its core enterprise integration platform.  The strategic decision to build application interfaces with in-house staff on the Ensemble platform has already generated tens of thousands dollars in cost savings over any other development approach, according to Craig Cypress, Network System Manager at Pronger Smith.

"Now that we've been trained and have experience working with Ensemble, it sometimes requires less than 10 minutes to build an interface ... maybe an hour if the interface is complex," Cypress stated. "The money we've saved by not having to bring new people in to create interfaces between our applications and other systems has already grown to tens of thousands of dollars," he estimated.

The desire to join a regional health information exchange (HIE) using a Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) electronic health record (EHR) format drove Pronger Smith's decision to implement enterprise-scale integration, according to CFO Bill Flamm. "We feel strongly that sharing information across the HIE results in improved care quality," he said. "Joining the HIE breaks us out of our standalone silo and helps ensure that physicians have the complete range of patient data needed to reduce the potential for error and to enable optimal care delivery."

After a successful rollout this year of Ensemble interfaces that provide connectivity between Pronger Smith's legacy EHR and the regional HIE, the organization is positioned to move forward with additional integration projects. "There is ongoing emphasis on being able to share information and smoothly integrate health care systems," Flamm said.

"Health care organizations of any size-from huge IDNs through community hospitals, clinics and physician practices-can quickly leverage Ensemble's comprehensive feature set," says Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems vice president of Strategic Planning. "As a result, they are well positioned for the information sharing that is essential for cost-effective delivery of the highest quality care."
