Crafting an Effective IT Asset Management Strategy

IT management is at the front lines of ensuring its enterprise infrastructure is optimized and cost effective in order to deliver critical services.

In a recent DBTA roundtable webinar, Wally Waltner, director of global IT asset management (ITAM) at First Data, and Cathy Won, product marketing director from BDNA, discussed tips and tricks for how to manage all types of data, and offered insight on how to leverage a ITAM project for other cost cutting and risk management initiatives.

Won said IT asset management is all about knowing what you have and from there being able to offer visibility, support, security, and more.

The global ITAM adoption process includes training delivered globally by one team, global asset audits, external process/procedure review, and regular training sessions, according to Waltner.

The pillars of successful ITAM include cost efficiency, software licensing and compliance, technical and legal risk, security, and user and customer satisfaction, Won and Waltner said.

IT faces issues such as irrelevant Data, inaccurate data, inconsistent data and incomplete data, Waltner explained.

According to Waltner, First Data has devised a strategy to maximize ITAM. This includes tools such as purchasing, discovery, efficient hardware, and a consolidated CMS.
