MariaDB Raises $9 Million as Founder Monty Widenius Comes On Board as CTO


MariaDB, a provider of open source relational database solutions, has received $9 Million in equity financing to support accelerating sales and advanced technology development. Monty Widenius, the creator of both MySQL and MariaDB, has joined the company as CTO and Michael Howard, who was most recently CEO at C9, has been named as the company’s CEO.

Intel Capital and California Technology Ventures were among the investors in the $9 million equity financing.

“MariaDB’s success as an open source technology goes hand-in-hand with its growing popularity in the commercial market. As part of the MariaDB team, I will be able to create innovative data management capabilities more quickly, and ensure these are open and accessible to the global development community by continuing the close collaboration with the MariaDB Foundation,” said Widenius.
