Oracle has introduced Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Oracle VM Templates for several Oracle applications. The Oracle applications have been packaged as ready-to-run virtual machines for deployment in Oracle’s Exalogic Elastic Cloud environment, said Adam Hawley, senior director of desktop and server virtualization product management at Oracle, in an interview.
The templates are now available for the Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.3, Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1, Oracle’s PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.52 and Oracle’s Siebel CRM 220.127.116.11 and 8.2.2. These are the first Oracle VM templates built for Oracle Exalogic.
According to Hawley, the availability of the new Oracle Exalogic Oracle VM Templates furthers Oracle’s strategy of using Oracle VM to facilitate faster and easier deployment and management of Oracle’s software and hardware stack.
“What is important is that not only that they are packaged as virtual machines, which we have done in the past, but also that they are packaged specifically to work with our Exalogic Cloud,” says Hawley. The Oracle Exa machines are called engineered systems for a reason, emphasizes Hawley. “We have done real engineering to get maximum performance. This is a set of templates that has been specifically tailored for running in the Exalogic system which is a high performance application system.”
According to Oracle, the benefit of using the Oracle Exalogic Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Applications include helping companies decrease application deployment time to minutes, instead of weeks; speed patching with pre-built templates for Oracle Application patchsets; and consolidate business applications on Oracle Exalogic, leading to higher hardware utilization.
Oracle VM Templates are virtual machine images based on Oracle’s expertise and best practices that contain pre-built, pre-installed, pre-configured and ready-to-run software applications with no installation required. They can be downloaded from Oracle E-Delivery and deployed on Oracle Exalogic, which, in its latest product generation, delivers 3.5x better application performance, 4.4x faster web application requests per second and a 4.6x improvement in messages per second compared to the previous generation.
This is increasingly the way the standard way Oracle is and will be doing business going forward – continuing to make these applications available the standard way, with the customers installing and configuring software themselves, “but also as Oracle VM templates that are very easily deployed in these turn-key engineered systems like Exalogic that are engineered to provide high performance in addition to rapid deployment times,” says Hawley.
Since each customer is different and each has their own environment, Hawley says customers might choose traditional deployment methods if there is existing hardware they need to use, or if there is a need to do extreme customization for their own local environment. “We don’t have any preference. We continue to support all of these customers, though Oracle VM templates, and then particularly in the context of Exalogic systems, continue to be the fastest way to deploy.”
