Riverbed Ups The Ante for Enterprise Consolidation

Riverbed Technology, an application performance vendor, announced a new release of its Riverbed Granite product family – including software and appliances – engineered to support enterprise-class server and data consolidation. New features are intended to enable IT managers to consolidate larger branch offices and data-intensive applications that previously were difficult or impossible to consolidate, the vendor says. Granite is intended to enable the removal of servers and data from branch offices so they can be positioned in a centralized data center.

The announcement includes new Granite 2.5 software that adds support for Fibre Channel to existing iSCSI support. This extends integration with enterprise-class storage arrays, including those from EMC, NetApp and IBM.

Granite now also provides automated snapshots and simplified support for existing data-center class backup and recovery software.

The solution set also includes the new Steelhead EX 1360 model appliance on which Granite can be hosted. The appliance consolidates larger data sets back to the data center while ensuring business continuity. The new model delivers local-speed experience for applications that need high-performance storage access such as high-volume transaction databases and geographic information systems (GIS) data modeling files that require high input/output per second (IOPS).

Granite 2.5 and Steelhead EX 1360 model appliances are expected to be generally available in Q3 2013.
