Data Center Spending on the Rise in 2009

There may be concerns that companies will be operating with tighter budgets this year, but data centers will continue to expand or proliferate. Digital Realty Trust, a large wholesale data center provider, surveyed 300 companies, and found that 84% are planning data center expansions in the next 12-24 months. The survey also found that 64% of surveyed companies with plans to expand in 2009 are planning to expand in two or more locations. Surveyed companies also plan to increase data center spending by an average of 6.6% this year. "Companies view their data centers as critical assets for increasing productivity while reducing costs," Digital Realty said. The survey also found that space requirements for data centers continue to grow, increasing 16% from 2008 to an average of 21,000 square feet in 2009.
