Data Governance for Big Data is Same as Traditional Data

There is a lot of buzz in the industry about big data, and it is a game-changing paradigm, but organizations still need to govern big data the same way they are governing traditional types of data, contends Sunil Soares, director of Information Governance at IBM. They still need to manage data quality, even when they don’t control the data because it comes from outside the organization. They also still need to consider how long to retain data because while storage is cheap it is not free, and they need to understands the privacy implications. “We consider information governance to really be a cross-functional discipline between AIT and the business to set policy, optimize, leverage and secure information as an enterprise asset. That includes the disciplines of data quality, metadata, integration with master data, information lifecycle management, and privacy.”
