Arvind Krishna has been elected as the CEO of IBM and a member of its board of directors. In this role, Krishna succeeds Virginia "Ginni" Rometty, IBM chairman, president, and CEO, who will continue as executive chairman of the board and serve through the end of the year, when she will retire after almost 40 years with the company. Announcing the executive changes on January 30, IBM said that Krishna, who is currently IBM SVP for Cloud and Cognitive Software, and was a principal architect of the company's acquisition of Red Hat, would assume the job on April 6, 2020. James Whitehurst, IBM SVP and CEO of Red Hat, was also elected by the board as IBM president, effective April 6, 2020

Volkswagen joined an open industry collaboration for the responsible sourcing of strategic minerals that will use blockchain technology to increase efficiency, sustainability and transparency in global mineral supply chains. The collaboration will enable the Volkswagen Group to gain greater insight into the provenance of cobalt used in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and other types of minerals used elsewhere in the production of vehicles.

The blockchain technology market is generally believed to be about $2 billion in 2019 and growing at an annual rate in excess of 50%—with projections for the market to exceed $10 billion by the end of 2025. Almost all of that new spending will be cloud-oriented; very few organizations consider running their own blockchain hardware. Therefore, it's not surprising to see cloud vendors actively promoting blockchain solutions.
