IBM today announced an agreement to acquire SPSS, a provider of predictive analytics software, services and solutions that help clients forecast trends and anticipate change for business advantage. The $1.2 billion all-cash purchase of SPSS, a publicly held company headquartered in Chicago, is expected to close in the second half of 2009.

Oracle today announced the availability of Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database 11g and Oracle In-Memory Database Cache 11g, the database caching option for Oracle Database 11g.

DataMentors, a full-service provider of data quality and data integration solutions, has introduced a new social media technology education program called "Insights" to provide business decision-makers with observations and explanations on how to better identify the pitfalls and opportunities in the data management and data marketing categories. The two minute-or-less tech ed segments will be distributed through a cross-section of social media networks and various websites.

Oracle said last week that it has agreed to acquire GoldenGate Software, Inc., a leading provider of real-time data integration solutions.

Quest Software recently announced the forthcoming release of Toad for Oracle version 10, the de-facto standard tool for Oracle database development and administration. Toad for Oracle 10 will offer new functionality enhancements that the Toad community has been asking for, providing improved productivity, better database manageability and easier access to educational resources. Toad for Oracle 10 is the culmination of suggestions gathered from the Toad community's "wish list," incorporating many enhancements in the areas of usability, automation, education, and flexibility.

SAP Business Objects recently announced enhancements to its Data Services and Data Federator software products, part of the SAP Business Objects Information Management (IM) Solutions Portfolio. These products support both SAP and non-SAP IT environments, and now with the latest release have expanded support for SAP customers with integration to the SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (SAP NetWeaver BW).

Varonis Systems Inc., a leader in unstructured data governance, has announced the availability of Version 5.0 of its DatAdvantage and DataPrivilege software products, which together provide a robust platform for integrated problem discovery, enhanced data protection, and entitlement management for data owners. Version 5.0 automates the implementation of file system protection best practices via its integrated problem discovery reports, which give guidance on reducing excessive access and maintaining optimal access controls.
