Virtustream, which was recently acquired by EMC, is strengthening its partnership with SAP, becoming one of a select few global partners providing cloud infrastructure services for SAP business-critical applications in SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud. The collaboration will allow SAP to leverage Virtustream's xStream Cloud Management Platform and its Micro-VM technology to deliver an IaaS with Service Level Agreements covering application performance.

To help companies get more value from big data, SAP has introduced HANA Vora, a new in-memory computing engine that leverages and extends the Apache Spark execution framework to provide enriched, interactive analytics on Hadoop. HANA Vora is a completely new product built from the ground up and is aimed at better processing of data to make business decisions.

Shortly after the explosion of non-relational databases, around 2009, it became apparent that rather than being part of the problem, SQL would instead continue to be part of the solution. If the new wave of database systems excluded the vast population of SQL-literate professionals, then their uptake in the business world would be impeded. Furthermore, a whole generation of business intelligence tools use SQL as the common way of translating user information requests into database queries. Nowhere was the drive toward SQL adoption more clear than in the case of Hadoop.

Datos IO has announced a recovery platform for next-generation scale-out databases. The company, headquartered in San Jose, Calif., was founded by former Data Domain (EMC), Veritas and IBM Research veteran Tarun Thakur, CEO, and Prasenjit Sarkar, CTO, who spent more than 15 years at IBM Research. The company is now offering its Early Access Program (EAP), and the product will is planned to be generally available in 2016.

Percona, a provider of enterprise-class MySQL and MongoDB solutions and services, is introducing Percona Server for MongoDB, an enhanced, open source, fully compatible drop-in replacement for MongoDB Community Edition that offers additional enterprise features and lower total cost of ownership. Completely open source and free to download and use, Percona Server for MongoDB offers all the features of MongoDB 3.0 Community Edition, along with two additional storage engine options - PerconaFT and Facebook's RocksDB - and enterprise-grade functionality, including Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL) and advanced auditing.

MapR Technologies, Inc., a provider of a distribution for Apache Hadoop, has extended its support for SAS, a provider of business analytics software and services. According to the vendors, the collaboration between SAS and MapR provides advanced analytics with ease of data preparation and integration with legacy systems, assurance of SLAs, and security and data governance compliance. Additionally, joint customers can cost-effectively grow their big data storage infrastructure without relying on storage area network (SAN) or network-attached storage (NAS).

IBM and GENCI, the high performance computing agency in France, are collaborating to speed up the path to exascale computing - the ability of a computing system to perform at least one exaflop, or a billion billion calculations, in one second. The collaboration, planned to run for at least 18 months, focuses on readying complex scientific applications for systems under development expected to achieve more than 100 petaflops, a solid step forward on the path to exascale.

Coinciding with IBM's launch of LinuxONE, SUSE announced that SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is the first and currently only server operating system supported by the recently announced KVM for IBM z Systems, open source-based server virtualization for the IBM mainframe. SUSE was the first to bring Linux to the mainframe, collaborating with IBM since 1999 to make SUSE Linux Enterprise Server a guest operating system on IBM z Systems.
