GoldenGate Software Inc., a leading provider of high availability and real-time data integration solutions across heterogeneous enterprise IT environments, held a webinar last week to showcase the results of a joint survey conducted with Unisphere Research, the research arm of Database Trends and Applications (DBTA). The survey results indicated the continued importance of the DBA role within the enterprise IT group. "Surveying the Role of Today's DBA" uncovered the realities faced by many DBAs today, driven by changing database environments and evolving responsibilities, in addition to their top priorities identified for 2009.

iWay Software, an Information Builders division and an innovator of enterprise integration solutions, has announced the immediate availability of a new iWay Enterprise Information Management (EIM) Suite. Designed to provide complete business visibility with speed and accuracy, the suite lowers the total cost of information management by addressing enterprise information needs in a single platform with reusable services.

The Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG), the world's largest user knowledgebase for Oracle Applications users, announced the 2009 list of associate member organizations participating in the OAUG Star Partner Program.

Sybase has unveiled Sybase IQ 15, the next generation of its column-based analytics server. The new release is focused at "filling a critical need for enterprises, especially in this economy, that need to do more sophisticated real time analytics to drive decision making" and that "need to do that on large volumes of data, but without sacrificing their profit margins," Lisa Hopkins, director, product marketing, Sybase, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

TIBCO Software Inc. has announced two new products, TIBCO Spotfire Miner 8.1 and TIBCO Spotfire S+ Server 8.1, that allow enterprises to incorporate and deploy predictive analytics on very large data sets in a wide range of business applications. The two products encourage better, more informed business decisions across the enterprise by utilizing the TIBCO Spotfire Enterprise Analytics Platform to deploy business applications that utilize powerful data mining, statistics and predictive modeling to discover hidden patterns, anticipate opportunities in a volatile environment, and optimize investment in limited resources.

Vertica Systems has announced a new version of its Vertica Analytic Database packaged as a virtualized appliance to run in VMware environments. The new Vertica Virtualized Analytic Database is a simple-to-deploy, self-contained software package that runs its own Linux operating system and copy of Vertica, on any VMware-supported hardware as if it were a physical computer.

Despite the bleak economic picture, there are bright spots. Sybase reported its best quarter and full year in the company's history, driven by factors such as database license revenues which increased 38% year over year in Q408 and 28% for the full year, ended Dec. 31, 2008. David Jonker, a senior product marketing manager at Sybase focused on market strategy for the Sybase ASE, SQL Anywhere and Mirror Activator product lines, shared some thoughts on the results.
