Outlining Data Mesh Best Practices at Data Summit 2024

There is no doubt that data mesh principles resonate with so many data professionals, particularly those looking to move beyond brittle, monolithic architecture. However, adopting data mesh can seem daunting, due to both a scarce but improving ecosystem of tools, as well as organizational change management. Database Elaborations

  • I am, Therefore I am A first and important step in being successful at almost any job or task is understanding oneself. This is true for engineers, modelers, or even architects. Do you know how to perform your tasks? Are you faster or slower than others doing the same tasks? Do you have more or less errors in your output than others? It seems that a rising number of people are so uncomfortable with competing that they may even avoid asking these kinds of questions of themselves; but this is not about competition, it is about understanding oneself, it is about being responsible, it is about holding oneself accountable.

  • The DBA's Crucial Role in Data Lifecycle Management In today's world where data reigns supreme, the role of Database Administrators (DBAs) extends far beyond just maintaining databases. DBAs play a crucial role in overseeing the entire lifecycle of data within organizations, from its inception to disposal. This is called data lifecycle management. But let's define data lifecycle management (or DLM) in a bit more depth.

  • New Troubleshooting Capabilities in SQL Server and Azure SQL Microsoft has recently released a powerful new DMV specifically to help with memory issues, sys.dm_os_out_of_memory_events. It is currently available in Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instances. This DMV consolidates and simplifies telemetry from SQL Server ring buffers, applies heuristics, and provides a result set. The DMV stores a record for each out-of-memory (OOM) event that occurs within the database, providing details about the OOM root cause, the memory consumption of database engine components at that point in time, potential sources of memory leaks, and more.

  • Can an AI Write My Column? The impact of generative AI (GenAI) is massive and is only going to increase. One area most immediately affected is journalism. Any job that involves the processing and production of the written word is a job that could be impacted by GenAI, which—at the end of the day—is designed to process language inputs and produce convincing output.

  • Building Modern Data Pipelines Using dbt—Tips and Tricks Earlier this year, I had the privilege of serving on the organizing committee for the DataTune conference in my hometown of Nashville, Tenn. Unlike many database-specific or platform-specific conferences, which tend to focus on analytics and data science, DataTune covers a wide variety of topics such as database engineering, development, administration, and analytics. I was delighted to be joined on the committee by two friends, Dustin Dorsey and Cameron Cyr, authors of Unlocking dbt: Design and Deploy Transformations in Your Cloud Data Warehouse.
