Cockroach Labs, the company behind CockroachDB, is receiving $160 million in new funding, enabling the company to continue its investments in product development to better support its customers. This latest funding round was led by Altimeter Capital with participation from new investors Greenoaks and Lone Pine, and existing investors Benchmark, BOND, FirstMark, GV, Index Ventures, and Tiger Global. This round brings Cockroach Labs' total funding to $355 million at a valuation of $2 billion.

BMC has announced several new capabilities and enhancements for the BMC Automated Mainframe Intelligence (AMI) and Compuware portfolios that enable BMC mainframe customers to protect uptime and availability, defend the mainframe against cybersecurity threats, and advance enterprise DevOps. Red Hat has announced plans to acquire StackRox, a provider of container and Kubernetes-native security. By bringing StackRox's Kubernetes-native security capabilities to Red Hat OpenShift, Red Hat's enterprise Kubernetes platform, Red Hat says it will further its vision to deliver a single, holistic platform that enables users to build, deploy and securely run nearly any application across the entirety of the hybrid cloud.

IBM Security is offering a new service that allows companies to experiment with fully homomorphic encryption (FHE)—an emerging technology designed to allow data to remain encrypted even while being processed or analyzed in cloud or third-party environments. Building on groundwork and tools developed IBM Research and IBM Z, the new IBM Security Homomorphic Encryption Services provide a scalable hosting environment on IBM Cloud, along with consulting and managed services to help clients begin learning about and designing prototype solutions which can take advantage of FHE.

Lacework, provider of a security platform for the cloud generation, has closed a $525 million growth round, bringing it to a valuation of more than $1 billion. The funding round was led by Sutter Hill Ventures and Altimeter Capital, and joined by D1, Coatue, Dragoneer Investment Group, Liberty Global Ventures, Snowflake Ventures, and Tiger Capital. "Building on cloud is the biggest shift the IT industry has ever witnessed. Constant cloud changes require a new approach to security critical for our customers adapting and scaling as fast as clouds innovate," said Dan Hubbard, CEO, Lacework.

Oracle has opened its new Chile Cloud Region, marking Oracle's 29th Cloud region worldwide. The opening is part of Oracle's plan to have 38 Cloud regions by the end of 2021. The Chile Cloud region will provide reduced latency to organizations, decreasing the time it takes for data to be transferred from the data center where the application data is hosted. In addition, the move to an Oracle Cloud region helps security-focused enterprises that need to meet demanding data residency requirements.

Microsoft and Red Hat have collaborated for more than 4 years on SQL Server and have come up with a variety of ways to better manage the server internals for higher performance. For example, the Windows OS has Large Pages and an option called Lock Pages in Memory. In Linux, you have the same capabilities using Transparent Huge Pages via trace flag 834, and even more memory management options by tuning dirty page ratios to pre­vent disk swapping.
