In 1965, Dick Pick and Don Nelson originally implemented PICK as the "Generalized Information Retrieval Language System" (GIRLS) on an IBM System/360 at TRW for use by the U.S. Army to control the inventory of Cheyenne helicopter parts. That was 50 years ago and MultiValue is still thriving today. It is a testament to the quality and flexibility of the technology for it to be going strong 50 years after its creation. Coincidentally, Rocket Software is also marking a significant event as it celebrates 25 years in business.

SAP has announced an update to SAP SQL Anywhere. Version 17 of the embeddable database technology enables Internet of Things (IoT) systems and data-intensive mobile apps to leverage new remote data synchronization capabilities of SAP SQL Anywhere with the SAP HANA platform to help securely move data between the enterprise and remote locations at the edge of the network.

In today's computing environments, data must often be moved between on-premises systems and public clouds, between private and public clouds, between different hybrid clouds, or between different public clouds. A new report based on a survey conducted by Unisphere Research among 342 IOUG members looks at the current state of data integration in the cloud era, including the key issues, priorities and solutions being adopted by organizations. Veritas, Symantec's information management business, has introduced new offerings, which it says, address the needs of rapidly evolving enterprise data centers, and provide significant upgrades to its core portfolio of backup and information management products. A previously announced operational separation of Veritas and Symantec is scheduled for October 2015, with the complete separation to take place by January 2016.

Rackspace is launching a dedicated option for MongoDB customers called ObjectRocket for MongoDB databases. The solution, which combines the speed and scalability of the ObjectRocket platform with dedicated hardware and networking for compliance-dependent use cases is aimed at providing the the performance, security and compliance required in high-risk industries such as healthcare, financial services and insurance. "Today we're announcing a fully dedicated cabinet solution to provide a high level of isolation for our customers," said Chris Lalonde, co-founder of ObjectRocket. "On top of that, we are also announcing an on disk encryption for MongoDB."

Veeam, which offers solutions for data backup and disaster recovery, is integrating its services with EMC when it releases its Veeam Availability Suite v9 later this year. The integration will enable IT to create backups and recover individual items from EMC storage snapshots. Enterprise IT will be able to use Veeam Backup from Storage Snapshots to rapidly create backups from EMC VNX or VNXe storage snapshots up to 20 times faster than competing products, according to the vendor.

Oracle has introduced Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) Release 5.2, the latest version of the company's secure remote access solution for cloud-hosted enterprise applications and hosted desktops running on not only Microsoft Windows, but also Linux, Solaris and mainframe servers. SGD allows users to work securely from any device and from any location, while providing administrators controlled access to applications and desktop environments resident in the data center, providing a key benefit to large companies in a BYOD world.

System z revenues - which doubled in the first quarter of 2015 - proved to be one of the few positive line items in IBM's latest spate of downward numbers. Revenues from System z mainframe server products increased 118% compared with the year-ago period. Total delivery of System z computing power, as measured in MIPS (millions of instructions per second), increased 95%.

MySQL has announced MySQL Server 5.7, release candidate 1 (5.7.7), which represents the first major release since the 5.6 GA release 2 years ago. MySQL 5.7 RC 1 adds enhancements in several important areas, which are targeted at both growing with existing customers and their current installed base and demands, as well as trying to enter into new market segments, according to Tomas Ulin, vice president for the MySQL engineering team at Oracle.
