Internet of Things

The phenomenon of connected machines is sometimes called the Internet of Things, the Internet of Anything, the Internet of Everything, or M2M (machine to machine). But no matter what the name, the growth of technology related to objects, which never before were network- and computer-enabled, is projected to have far-reaching technological, societal, and economic impact.

The strongest examples of the impact of the Internet of Things are in the industrial sector. Embedded software, sensors, and network connectivity promises to improve the way factories, data centers, oil wells, and cities, airplanes, cars, and even homes are maintained because data can be collected continuously with alerts issues proactively to prevent failures and outages.

According to Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group, 50 billion devices will be connected by 2020, up from 2010's 12.5 billion. By 2020, data production will be 44 times greater than it was in 2009, and by 2020, more than one-third of the data produced will live in or pass through the cloud, according to Computer Sciences Corp.

T-Systems, a German subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, is using Talend Big Data Integration software to streamline the collection and cleansing of data as part of T-Systems' Big Data platform services.

In his second keynote at Oracle OpenWorld 2016, Oracle executive chairman and CTO Larry Ellison highlighted key features of Oracle's recent product announcements. While in his first keynote, Ellison identified Amazon for infrastructure and Workday for applications as Oracle's chief competitors, throughout his second presentation, he centered Amazon in Oracle's competitive cross-hairs. SAP has completed its acquisition of Altiscale, which provides a high-performance, scalable Big Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS) solution that includes full operational services. The company announced this acquisition at Strata + Hadoop 2016 in New York City. With this acquisition Altiscale will operate as a focused and integrated BDaaS offering from SAP to help accelerate and operationalize Big Data deployment in the enterprise.

Describing itself as the world's largest privately-controlled technology company, the combined entity will be known as Dell Technologies.

Oracle announced today that it is acquiring NetSuite in a transaction valued at approximately $9.3 billion. The transaction is expected to close in 2016. In a statement, Zach Nelson, CEO of NetSuite, said that NetSuite will benefit from Oracle's global scale and reach to accelerate the availability of its cloud solutions.
