AES, an infrastructure support provider, is now shipping a toolset supporting IBM's zEnterprise System, as well as providing analysis of network traffic performance for multi-architecture environments, including z/OS, Linux on System z, z/VM, z/VSE, AIX, OSA Express and Windows.

CorreLog, Inc., a provider of log management and security solutions, says it has begun shipping a z/OS agent that helps organizations correlate mainframe security events with security events from Windows, Linux, UNIX, routers, firewalls, and and instantly notify the appropriate personnel in the event of a security threat or breach. The new product, CorreLog Agent for z/OS, works with the CorreLog Security Correlation Server, to enable organizations to monitor enterprise IT security, including mainframes, from a central viewpoint, says George Faucher, president of CorreLog. "For many customers, an IBM mainframe is their most strategic box. However, until now, they had no way of viewing it as part of their enterprise security picture."

CA Technologies says it is now shipping a toolset for collaboratively visualizing and managing data across multiple systems. The product, CA Erwin Data Modeler r8, offers enhanced visualization and different ways to visualize data models in non-traditional formats. "We completely ripped out our old user interface and put in a new one," Donna Burbank, senior director of marketing, Data Management, CA Technologies, tells 5 Minute Briefing. With features like graphics, themes, fonts, and auto layout, she observes, "It is really more like a drawing tool on the front with the power of a data modeling tool behind it."

FalconStor Software, a provider of data protection solutions, is now offering a disaster recovery (DR) automation tool as part of its FalconStor Continuous Data Protector (CDP) product line.

IBM announced workload-optimized systems to help companies manage a range of more demanding data center workloads. The new systems include a new offering for the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX); IBM Storwize Rapid Application Storage (RAS) solution; and System x products. The offerings span IBM's systems portfolio.

Think About It

Okay, IBM's Watson got a little flummoxed about airport names at Chicago versus Toronto, but chalk it up to nervousness at his first live TV appearance. Overall, however, the supercomputer - running on 2,880 POWER7 cores in a cluster of 90 IBM Power 750 servers on Linux - won handily over Jeopardy's all-time reigning human champions, proving the computers have the capability to learn and respond to natural language queries steeped in culture, subtleties and wordplays.
