The landscape for database management systems is changing more rapidly these days than it has since the earliest days of the relational DBMS. Not only do we have an onslaught of NoSQL database systems of various different forms (column, document, key/value, and graph databases), but we also see a burgeoning market for in-memory database management, where the DBMS relies on main memory instead of disk for data storage, management, and manipulation. But there is another "category" of DBMS evolving that is known as "NewSQL."

Rackspace is launching a dedicated option for MongoDB customers called ObjectRocket for MongoDB databases. The solution, which combines the speed and scalability of the ObjectRocket platform with dedicated hardware and networking for compliance-dependent use cases is aimed at providing the the performance, security and compliance required in high-risk industries such as healthcare, financial services and insurance. "Today we're announcing a fully dedicated cabinet solution to provide a high level of isolation for our customers," said Chris Lalonde, co-founder of ObjectRocket. "On top of that, we are also announcing an on disk encryption for MongoDB."

Prior to the EDW, corporations had plenty of data, but the data was not believable.

To help users extract insights from data lakes,Teradata has made a multi-year commitment to contribute to Presto's open source development. Based on a three-part roadmap, Teradata's says its contributions will be 100% open source under the Apache license and will advance Presto's code base, scalability, iterative querying, and ability to query multiple data repositories.

Attunity Ltd., a provider of information availability software solutions, has introduced Attunity Replicate for MongoDB. The solution extends its capability to automate and accelerate data loading and replication between databases, data warehouses, Hadoop and MongoDB. OpenStack turns five this year, and the project has come a long way in its short life so far. Last year brought major improvements in areas such as upgradeability between versions and overall usability, which upped the appeal of OpenStack to enterprises while also netting important backers such as HP (acquired private cloud vendor and one-time OpenStack competitor Eucalyptus) and VMware (OpenStack was a recurring theme at VMworld 2014).

MySQL has announced MySQL Server 5.7, release candidate 1 (5.7.7), which represents the first major release since the 5.6 GA release 2 years ago. MySQL 5.7 RC 1 adds enhancements in several important areas, which are targeted at both growing with existing customers and their current installed base and demands, as well as trying to enter into new market segments, according to Tomas Ulin, vice president for the MySQL engineering team at Oracle. SUSE has improved high availability capabilities for deployments of the SAP HANA platform via SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, the recommended and supported operating system for use with SAP HANA. The new version of the resource agents enhance the high availability component of SUSE Linux Enterprise for SAP Applications, with two additional scenarios for customers to automate their system replication of SAP HANA. In addition to the original performance-based scenario, SUSE now supports cost-based and multi-tier SAP HANA system replication.

SAP has announced it has certified its products on Oracle Database 12c. "More than two-thirds of all SAP customers run their SAP applications on the Oracle Database today. Unstructured data types and new database management systems are playing an increasing role in the modern data ecosystem, but structured data in relational database management systems (RDBMS) remains the foundation of the information infrastructure in most companies.
