Sybase, Inc. has announced it is leveraging the newest version of its column-based analytics server—Sybase IQ 15.1—and its global mobile messaging reach, enabling the company to provide deep analytics functionality on the Sybase 365 mobile services platform that will address the needs of mobile operators, financial institutions and enterprise customers. The first offering, to be launched in Q1 2010, will be a hosted analytics solution for mobile operators, providing them with improved quality of service, a greater insight into their off-network messaging traffic, and enabling them to better execute revenue generating activities around these trends.

Infobright, an open source data warehousing company, and Talend, an open source data integration company, have announced the availability of two integrated virtual machines for data warehousing and business intelligence. The first virtual machine combines the Infobright Community Edition analytic database with the Talend data integration tool, Talend Open Studio. The second virtual machine bundles these same two products with Jaspersoft's open source report server, JasperServer Community Edition, to deliver an end-to-end business intelligence solution.

Aster Data, a provider of data warehousing solutions for "big data" applications, yesterday announced Aster Data Version 4.0, which the company describes as the industry's first "Massively Parallel Data-Application Server." Aster Data 4.0 allows companies to embed applications inside Aster Data's MPP (massively parallel processing) data warehouse, so businesses can now store, analyze and speed processing of terabytes to petabytes of data. The ability to push applications down into the MPP database also opens a new opportunity for companies to deliver new interactive, big data applications.

Yesterday marked the beginning of the annual Teradata Partners User Group conference with a flurry of announcements from the enterprise data warehousing leader focused on new product innovations and partner developments. "Information is power, but intelligence is transformative," James Vollmer, president of the Partners steering committee, announced to a buzzing room after stepping out of a custom Teradata-orange muscle car during the opening keynote.

Aster Data, a provider of data analytics and management platforms for "big data" applications, has announced the availability of a new Aster-Hadoop Data Connector, which utilizes Aster's patent-pending SQL-MapReduce capabilities for two-way, high-speed, data transfer between Apache Hadoop and Aster Data's massively parallel data warehouse.

Teradata Corporation, a provider of enterprise data warehousing solutions, was invited to provide testimony before the U.S. House Financial Services Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, joining a panel of experts and stakeholders on the topic. The hearing, titled "Utilizing Technology to Improve TARP and Financial Services Oversight" was largely focused on driving accountability and transparency through database technology. Dow Jones & Company, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the SAS Institute, Inc, and the Center for Democracy and Technology were also among the witnesses.

The world's first OLTP Database Machine was unveiled yesterday by Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, with John Fowler, Sun executive vice president, during a live webcast. "For a long time we have been working with Sun and this is the latest output of that partnership—Oracle Exadata version 2, hardware by Sun and software by Oracle," said Ellison.

Oracle Database 11g Release 2 became generally available and downloadable yesterday from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). Improvements have been made in all key areas, with a general emphasis on helping customers lower their IT infrastructure costs. Announcing the new release during a conference call yesterday, Andy Mendelsohn, senior vice president of Database Server Technologies, Oracle observed, "Right now the majority of our installed base customers are running on 10g R2, with a good number on 11g R1. The reason 11g R2 is important is not only for the innovations in the release but it is really the release that the masses of our installed base are going to be moving to as they go to the 11g family of databases."

Jaspersoft, provider of business intelligence (BI) software, and Infobright, the open source data warehouse company, have announced the general availability of what they describe as the first open source project to feature end-to-end BI, extract-transform-load (ETL), and data warehousing capabilities. The companies have also announced that Bi3 Solutions, provider of a virtual on-demand BI solution, has chosen the BI project to build an end-to-end BI suite.

IBM has announced version 9.7 of DB2 and InfoSphere Warehouse software, focused on transactional performance improvements in the DB2 database, and on expansion of analytics to XML data in the InfoSphere Data Warehouse. Both new products also reduce an even greater amount of space needed to store data, helping clients to gain significant savings on related costs including energy. This offering is also the industry's first database software that will deliver business analytics capabilities for both relational and XML data at the same time, according to IBM.

Infobright, an open source data warehousing company, has released Infobright 3.1, the latest version of its data warehouse product that offers simplicity, ease of use and low total cost of ownership. According to the vendor, the columnar database is ideal for analytics, and is available in two editions: a free, open source version named Infobright Community Edition (ICE) and a licensable version named Infobright Enterprise Edition (IEE). The version 3.1 product release contains two primary new features, one of which is available with both the ICE and IEE, and the other only with the IEE.

Sybase, Inc., announced that Sybase IQ 15, combined with Sun Microsystems' Sun Fire X4540 storage server and running the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), recorded the best price/performance result in the TPC-H benchmark at 3000 GB scale factor for all non-clustered systems. The benchmark simulates decision support systems that analyze large volumes of data, executes queries with a high degree of complexity, and gives answers to critical business questions. Sybase says that the achievement illustrates the effectiveness of Sybase IQ 15 in helping to optimize IT asset utilization and significantly reduce ownership costs.

Greenplum, a leading provider of database software for the next generation of data warehousing and analytics, has announced new technology designed to accelerate data loading for companies dealing with exponential data growth. Greenplum's new "MPP Scatter/Gather Streaming" (SG Streaming) technology eliminates the bottlenecks associated with other approaches to data loading, enabling high-speed flows of data into the Greenplum Database for large-scale analytics and data warehousing. According to Greenplum, some of its customers are achieving production loading speeds of over four terabytes per hour with negligible impact on concurrent database operations. The SG Streaming technology is available immediately and is a standard feature of the Greenplum Database.

Altosoft, a provider of process-aware business intelligence software solutions, has announced a partnership with Netezza Corporation, which develops and sells data warehouse and analytics appliances. As a result of the partnership, Altosoft's InsightBI business intelligence solution has been certified with the Netezza Performance Server (NPS) data warehouse appliances, and the two companies will collaborate on marketing and sales. Many Altosoft customers have already been running the company's software on Netezza appliances, and this partnership formalizes that combination by providing the market with a fully certified interoperable solution. While the two products are not physically bundled together and must still be purchased separately from the respective companies, their integration has been tested and proven and Altosoft is now a Certified Netezza Partner.
