The Exadata Database Machine X4-8 has been designed to deliver extreme compute and data throughput for large database workloads using 8-socket database servers, intelligent storage, PCI flash cards, and unified InfiniBand connectivity. The Exadata Database Machine X4-8 expecially suited for a number of large scale enterprise scenarios, said Tim Shetler, vice president of product management, Oracle. "It is an ideal platform for hosting memory-intensive workloads such as the Oracle Database In-Memory option."

The industry hype would have you believe that the key word in the phrase "big data" is big, a reference to datasets so large and complex that they cannot be managed within the confines of traditional IT systems and that the many opportunities for operational improvement that come from better analysis of data and information are reserved for those in the enterprise. Understandable, but completely wrong.

SAP and Esri are strengthening and simplifying integration of the SAP HANA platform, analytics, mobile and business applications with Esri's geospatial services and content. The companies say the partnership helps customers break down information silos and simplifies access to shared data in SAP business applications and Esri GIS systems so business users have a more complete picture and can make more informed decisions.

After a 99% approval by the annual general meeting of shareholders in May, the company has been registered as a European Company by the Commercial Register. As a result, the German subsidiary has changed its name to SAP Deutschland SE & Co. KG. With this step, SAP says it is underscoring the company's international nature.

Oracle today introduced Oracle Big Data SQL, which allows customers to run one SQL query across Hadoop, NoSQL, and Oracle Database, minimizing data movement while overcoming data silos. According to Oracle the new solution helps customers gain a competitive advantage by making it easier to uncover insights faster, and allows them to leverage existing SQL skills while protecting data security and enforcing governance. Oracle Big Data SQL runs on Oracle Big Data Appliance and can work in conjunction with Oracle Exadata Database Machine.

RainStor has added an archive application for Hadoop 2.0 with its latest release, RainStor 6. Building on RainStor's existing interactive SQL-on-Hadoop stack, the new archive application features XQuery for hierarchical data and documents, and extends analytics support to SQL 2003.

Dell has extended its longstanding collaboration with SAP. As part of the extended partnership, Dell is introducing new non-disruptive migration and modernization services for the SAP HANA platform and SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP ASE), and has also worked with SAP to certify Dell PowerEdge R920 for running SAP HANA with with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in addition to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

Oracle president Mark Hurd and Oracle executive vice president John Fowler showcased Solaris 11.2 during a recent event in New York City. A complete, integrated and open platform engineered for large-scale cloud environments, Solaris 11.2 combines OpenStack, SDN technology, clustering, and virtualization with an enterprise-class OS. Oracle Solaris is one of two operating system options for Oracle Exadata, and is described by Oracle as a key building block that provides mission-critical reliability, performance, and security that are essential for database consolidation. According to Hurd, cloud and engineered systems are both driven by the same requirement, which is the need to transfer work from the IT budget to the R&D budget to make things work more efficiently.

With Oracle's new ZS3 Series for backup, Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-BA, the company is providing customers with a pre-configured, pre-racked solution co-engineered with Oracle Database to provide extreme backup and restore performance to help meet SLAs. According to Oracle, ZS3-BA helps ensure backup and recovery SLAs are met by scaling to 26 TB/hr for full backups and 17 TB/hr for full restores - a 30% increase for backups and 80% increase for restores over the previous generation.

At an event at Oracle's headquarters, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison showcased the new Oracle Database In-Memory, an additional option to the Oracle Database 12c. Oracle Database In-Memory is scheduled for release in July, said Ellison. The Oracle Database In-Memory is the underpinning of finally making the real-time enterprise a reality, explained Tim Shetler, Oracle vice president of product management, in an interview before the launch event in which he highlighted the key elements of the release. "We have built this in-memory option to be completely transparent to the huge ecosystem of Oracle Database customers and applications that are already written for the Oracle Database."
