IBM announced its second-quarter 2020 earnings results. According to Arvind Krishna, IBM CEO, the company's cloud message is resonating with customers. Describing the key trends IBM sees and also how they relate to the mainframe, Krishna said that clients want to modernize apps, move more workloads to the cloud, and automate IT tasks. "They want to infuse AI into their workflows and secure their IT infrastructure to fend off growing cybersecurity threats. As a result, we are seeing an increased opportunity for large, transformational projects." IBM's family of Cloud Paks introduced in the second half of last year allows its middleware to run in a cloud-native environment and bridge its clients from the past to the future. "This means clients can now deploy our software anywhere OpenShift runs. It is infrastructure-agnostic, across not just public and private clouds, but also our mainframes and power system platforms."

SUSE, an independent open source company, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Cupertino-based Rancher Labs, an open source company that provides a Kubernetes management platform. SUSE says this acquisition of Rancher represents the first step in SUSE's inorganic growth strategy since becoming a fully independent software company in March 2019.

IBM has announced that the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform is generally available for IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE. According to IBM, the availability of OpenShift for Z and LinuxONE is a major milestone for both hybrid multi-cloud and for enterprise computing. OpenShift supports cloud-native applications being built once and deployed anywhere—and now extends this to on-premise enterprise servers such as IBM Z and LinuxONE. The offering is the result of the collaboration between the IBM and Red Hat development teams and discussions with early adopter clients.

Red Hat has introduced Red Hat OpenShift Container Storage 4 to provide an integrated, multi-cloud experience to Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform users. Enhanced with Multi-Cloud Object Gateway from Red Hat's 2018 acquisition of NooBaa, Red Hat says that OpenShift Container Storage 4 enables greater abstraction and flexibility so customers have the freedom to choose data services across multiple public clouds, while still operating from a unified Kubernetes-based control plane for applications and storage.

VMware has completed the acquisition of Pivotal Software, a cloud-native platform provider. Following the acquisition, Pivotal's Class A common stock was removed from listing on the New York Stock Exchange. Pivotal will now operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of VMware. The transaction represented an enterprise value for Pivotal of approximately $2.7 billion.

Oracle and VMware have expanded their partnership. With this new solution, customers will be able to migrate VMware vSphere workloads to Oracle's Generation 2 Cloud Infrastructure. As part of this partnership, Oracle will also provide technical support for Oracle software running in VMware environments both in customer on-premise data centers and Oracle-certified cloud environments.

Oracle has announced the general availability in all commercial regions of Oracle Functions, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's functions-as-a-service (FaaS) platform. The announcement was made in an August 1 blog post by Shaun Smith, who leads serverless product management at Oracle and is a member of the open source Fn Project functions platform team. According to Smith, Oracle Functions is built on the Apache 2.0 licensed Fn Project, which can be used anywhere, from a developer laptop to a cloud compute platform, and customers have the option to operate their own functions service in-house or use the cloud-scale Oracle Functions platform to avoid the costs associated with managing infrastructure.

Google Cloud will begin supporting VMware workloads, said Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud. The new solution will leverage VMware software-defined data center (SDCC) technologies, including VMware vSphere, NSX and vSAN software deployed on a platform administered by CloudSimple for GCP.
