TeamQuest, a global leader in IT capacity planning and performance monitoring, is adding advanced capacity management and application health capabilities for the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform. The TeamQuest solution is already available for Amazon EC2, and with the addition of Azure, TeamQuest software will now cover the two most popular infrastructure-as-a-service providers, the company said.

Organizations are getting squeezed, said Mark Hurd, Oracle CEO, in his Monday morning keynote at Oracle OpenWorld 2015. They have old infrastructure; there is the need for innovation but also great pressure to do things such as increase security and adhere to governance mandates which are not innovative; and also pressure to keep costs flat, without increasing IT costs. "This is why the cloud is such a big deal," said Hurd, sharing his list of top 5 predictions for 2025.

In what is being hailed as the biggest tech merger ever, Dell Inc. and EMC Corp. today formally announced they have signed a definitive agreement under which Dell will acquire EMC. The total transaction is valued at $67 billion. The deal is expected to close in the second or third quarter of Dell's fiscal year which ends February 3, 2017 (within the months of May to October 2016). The industry is going through a "tremendous transformation," with the old style of IT being "pretty quickly disrupted" yet this rapid change is also presenting "incredibly rich" opportunities, said Joe Tucci, chairman and chief executive officer of EMC, during a conference call with media and industry analysts.

Continuity Software, a provider of IT operations analytics for infrastructure outage prevention, unveiled a new release of its AvailabilityGuard software, intended to provide enterprise IT teams with advanced predictive analytics, risk detection, and outage prevention capabilities across their software-defined data centers. "The transition towards the software-defined data center delivers higher levels of agility and control to IT organizations, but at the same time presents new challenges," said Doron Pinhas, CTO of Continuity Software.

VMware recently made a slew of announcements spanning cloud deployments, data center, and devices. The company introduced what it calls the first fully automated software suite for delivering the software-defined data center as an integrated system. Serving as a foundation of VMware's Unified Hybrid Cloud platform, the solution, called VMware EVO SDDC, will extend the virtualization principals of abstraction, pooling and automation across all data center resources and services.

Curvature, an IT infrastructure and services provider, announced it is teaming up with DataCore, a provider of software-defined storage (SDS) solutions, to provide combined solutions intended to help manage storage costs. Curvature will offer tools intended to take advantage of commoditized hardware to build storage infrastructure and deliver unique ways to extend the life of existing equipment.

Platform9, which provides an OpenStack powered service that allows an organization to turn its existing servers into a self-service private cloud, has announced general availability of Platform9 Managed OpenStack for VMware vSphere environments. Oracle has taken the wraps off Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.0, the latest release of the free and open source, cross-platform virtualization software. Now generally available, Oracle VM VirtualBox runs on standard x86 desktop and laptop computers, and enables developers and users to create cloud and local applications without the overhead of using a full server environment.

SolarWinds, a provider of IT performance management software, is updating its virtualization suite, which provides troubleshooting and monitoring for Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere. "With Virtualization Manager version 6.3, we wanted to give administrators the ability to make remediation and to take action within the console," said Nikki Jennings, SolarWinds' group vice president of products and markets. "With the power of all this information we wanted administrators to see that there's a problem and take action."

JethroData has closed an $8.1 million Series B financing round led by Square Peg Capital, and including existing investor Pitango Venture Capital. This funding round comes on the heels of the general availability of JethroData's SQL-on-Hadoop software, which uses indexes to query data up to 100 times faster than alternative SQL on Hadoop solutions.

IBM is acquiring Blue Box Group to simplify the running of private clouds using OpenStack-based solutions. Blue Box is a privately held company based in Seattle that provides businesses with a private cloud as a service platform based on OpenStack. IBM says the addition will help businesses integrate their cloud-based applications and on-premises systems into OpenStack-based managed cloud. Additionally, Blue Box strengthens IBM Cloud's existing OpenStack portfolio with the introduction of a remotely managed OpenStack offering. This offering provides clients with a local cloud and increased visibility, control and security.

Red Hat, Inc., a provider of enterprise open source solutions, is offering a technology preview of Red Hat Gluster Storage with capabilities from the OpenStack community's new Manila project. The Red Hat Gluster Storage with Manila technology preview is planned for inclusion in the forthcoming Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 7 release.
