Unique data requires a unique solution, and yet countless vendors are advertising one-stop solutions described as "one-size-fits-all." But buyer beware: When something seems too good to be true, it usually is, and an easy, one-size-fits-all solution may save you some short term time and money, but can result in major headaches and unforeseen costs in the long run.

IBM released its fourth-quarter and annual revenue numbers for 2015, showing soft business overall. However, the company's cloud, analytics, and mainframes continued to surge forward. Total revenue for the year 2015 was $81.7 billion, down 12% from the previous year, and down almost 24% from a peak of $106.9 billion in 2011.

Red Hat, Inc., a provider of open source solutions, has begun shipping an update to its open source IT automation framework, designed to bring increased stability, new automation capabilities, and new integrations with a variety of services and providers. The solution, Ansible 2.0, is intended to better support public, private, and hybrid cloud deployments, as well as Microsoft Windows environments and network management.

Oracle continued to hammer home its message on the value of cloud at its CloudWorld event for customers and partners at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Cloud is critical to IT because of a confluence of factors, ranging from business trends to demographics, said Mark Hurd, Oracle CEO, in his keynote at the event, repeating a warning he has issued at past Oracle events.

Rackspace has added three key enhancements spanning data storage, security, and DR to the ObjectRocket offering for MongoDB to address requirements in mission-critical enterprise scenarios. The new capabilities were announced in a blog post by Kyle Hunter, product marketing manager for ObjectRocket solutions at Rackspace. The database market is growing strongly and the biggest growth area is open source databases, according to Chris Lalonde, CEO and co-founder of ObjectRocket.

CA Technologies announced new product releases in its identity-centric security portfolio that protect and enable the hybrid enterprise, spanning cloud, distributed, mobile, and mainframe. A new release of CA Privileged Access Manager helps control privileged user access to dynamic VMware NSX environments. Updates to CA Identity Suite help simplify identity governance for all users, and a new product, CA Data Content Discovery, helps address compliance demands by discovering and classifying mainframe data.

Cirba Inc., a provider of software-defined infrastructure control solutions, released integration to EMC ViPR SRM, enabling organizations to optimize use of storage resources through smarter workload placements and visibility into storage health. The new integration adds to Cirba's existing support for placing workloads and optimizing infrastructure considering datastore requirements and physical storage resources managed by NetApp OnCommand Insight (OCI), announced in August 2015.

EMC has unveiled an assortment of products and solutions designed to connect primary storage and data protection systems to private and public clouds. "Cloud has become a strategic imperative for our customers," said Christopher Ratcliffe, SVP, EMC Core Technologies. And, one of the things that EMC often hears from customers, he said, is that even if they don't want to use it today, they want to know that they have the option to do so in the future if they choose.

Microsoft and Linux software provider Red Hat have announced a partnership to provide Red Hat solutions on the Microsoft Azure cloud service. Microsoft is offering Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the preferred choice for enterprise Linux workloads on Microsoft Azure. In addition, Microsoft and Red Hat are also working together to address common enterprise, ISV and developer needs for building, deploying and managing applications on Red Hat software across private and public clouds.

They have old infrastructure; there is the need for innovation but also great pressure to do things such as increase security and adhere to governance mandates which are not innovative; and also pressure to keep costs flat, without increasing IT costs. In what is being hailed as the biggest tech merger ever, Dell Inc. and EMC Corp. today formally announced they have signed a definitive agreement under which Dell will acquire EMC. The total transaction is valued at $67 billion. The deal is expected to close in the second or third quarter of Dell's fiscal year which ends February 3, 2017 (within the months of May to October 2016). The industry is going through a "tremendous transformation," with the old style of IT being "pretty quickly disrupted" yet this rapid change is also presenting "incredibly rich" opportunities, said Joe Tucci, chairman and chief executive officer of EMC, during a conference call with media and industry analysts.

VMware recently made a slew of announcements spanning cloud deployments, data center, and devices. The company introduced what it calls the first fully automated software suite for delivering the software-defined data center as an integrated system. Serving as a foundation of VMware's Unified Hybrid Cloud platform, the solution, called VMware EVO SDDC, will extend the virtualization principals of abstraction, pooling and automation across all data center resources and services.

Curvature, an IT infrastructure and services provider, announced it is teaming up with DataCore, a provider of software-defined storage (SDS) solutions, to provide combined solutions intended to help manage storage costs.
