A goal at many organizations is to make the data that matters more broadly accessible to more users in a timely fashion. However, at the same time, enterprise data environments are becoming more complex and costly, running on many platforms, supporting many applications, and handling growing volumes of data. IT is expected to respond quickly to new initiatives that can support the business but as IT environments become more unwieldy, agility is an elusive concept.

IBM and AT&T are jointly working on extending AT&T NetBond services to the SoftLayer platform to offer customers a combined security and performance solution. This alliance is intended to help enable businesses to create hybrid-computing solutions. AT&T Virtual Private Network (VPN) customers can use AT&T NetBond to connect their IT infrastructure to SoftLayer's cloud services.

The HP SDN App Store is intended to provide HP's partners a platform together with consulting and support services that will enable customers to uncover the business value of SDN. The HP SDN App Store will be generally available on Oct. 1.

Brocade is beefing up its routers with capabilities to address the bandwidth, scale, and performance needed for emerging software defined networks. The Brocade MLX Series routers will include new hardware modules and software. As part of the update, Brocade is delivering software enhancements to the Brocade MLXe carrier-class routing platform, including support for OpenFlow 1.3 with significant features to help organizations deploy new application- and user-specific services in a secure manner.

Hurd described the dramatic impact cloud, exploding data volumes, social, business, consumer sophistication, and mobility are having on IT organizations, and then interviewed executives about the individual challenges faced by each, including Yael Cosset of dunnhumby; Stephen Little of Xerox; Jamie Miller of GE; Filippo Passerini of P&G; Kimberly S. Stevenson of Intel Corporation; and Tim Theriault of Walgreen Co.

Oracle CTO Larry Ellison took the stage at the Moscone Center to kick off the Oracle OpenWorld conference on Sunday evening. As he does each year, Ellison outlined major announcements for the week and explained the company's technology vision to set the tone for the conference. Confirming analysts' predictions that 2014 would be the year of the cloud for Oracle, Ellison said 2014 is an inflection point for the company. Ellison's key announcement was Oracle's upgraded platform-as-a-service capability: a fourth generation upward-compatible database.

In what is being heralded as an epic change at Oracle, Larry Ellison, the charismatic CEO of Oracle, is stepping down and will be succeeded by Safra Catz and Mark Hurd who will share the CEO position. Despite the widespread pronouncements that this is the end of an era and that Ellison is relinquishing his membership in the exclusive club of rock-star tech leaders that has included Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates, some industry insiders believe that is simply not the case. Ellison, they say, will remain a force to be reckoned with at Oracle.

A new IBM research report provides a performance comparison of virtual machines, specifically KVM, and Linux containers, specifically Docker. As expected, Linux containers offer less overhead than full virtualization with KVM, but the difference is surprisingly small in many cases especially for CPU and memory-intensive workloads.

Ericcson and SAP have announced plans for Ericsson to offer SAP's cloud-based enterprise mobility management portfolio Mobile Secure combined with an IT managed service offering, thereby expanding Ericsson's portfolio of services available for its more than 400 mobile network operators. Worldwide, Ericsson manages networks that serve 600 million subscribers and additionally provides managed services for networks that serve 1 billion subscribers. The companies cited estimates that the enterprise mobility management market will reach $2.1 billion by 2016.

In this month's column, Guy Harrison writes about Docker, an open source project based on Linux containers that is showing rapid adoption. "Unlike virtual machines, Docker containers do not have to include a copy of the guest OS - each Docker container essentially shares the same copy of the underlying OS," explains Harrison. "This allows Docker containers to be much smaller, which, in turn, allows them to be more easily deployed, provides for greater density (more containers per host) and permits faster initialization."
