And, with SQL remaining an effective and widely embraced query language, companies have to balance working with traditional methods against the need for some of the newer methods as well.

In late December, it was quietly announced that StackEngine, an Austin, Texas-based provider of a container operations platform for developers, DevOps and IT teams, had been acquired by Oracle. Separately, in late December, Oracle announced plans to construct a next-generation technology campus in Austin as part of its global hiring initiative to drive Oracle cloud expansion and attract millennial talent.

The availability of Apache Spark 1.6 was announced today. The Spark 1.6 release continues the major theme of making Spark easier to use for data applications, said Reynold Xin, co-founder at Databricks, the company behind Spark. "There are lots of improvements and new features - in fact over 1,000 - in this Spark release," said Xin.

The continual evolution in technology has allowed for more data sources than previously thought possible. The growth of SaaS tools provides many benefits, but there is a downside as well. Bringing these cloud data sources into a coherent system for reporting is perpetually a challenge for IT and business intelligence teams.
