Much has been made of the new kernel patching infrastructure, but that was not the only reason for the version number change, said Linux creator Linus Torvalds in his release notes. "We've had much bigger changes in other versions," Torvalds added. "So this is very much a ‘solid code progress' release."

The hardware innovations span systems, boards, and cards, and a new microprocessor customized for China. Built by OpenPower members, the new solutions leverage the POWER architecture to provide more choice, customization, and performance to customers, including hyperscale data centers.

SoftLayer will offer OpenPOWER-based servers as part of its portfolio of cloud-based services.
