Red Hat has released the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 beta with versions for IBM POWER, System z, as well as x86, x86/64, and Itanium. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 beta release includes new features and capabilities, combined with enhancements in virtualization, storage/filesystem, security and developer tools. The release is expected to be generally available before the end of the year, notes Subhendu Ghosh, Red Hat Enterprise Linux product manager.

Novell has announced the latest version of PlateSpin Migrate, a workload management product that enables data center managers to move workloads between physical, image, virtual and cloud environments. PlateSpin Migrate provides broad support for operating systems, hypervisors and hardware platforms in the heterogeneous data center. The latest version of PlateSpin Migrate expands the list of platforms supported for physical to virtual migration, by adding support for the recently released SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 from Novell to the existing support for prior versions of SUSE Linux Enterprise.

Continuing to hold its place as leader of the pack, for a record-setting tenth consecutive time, an IBM system has achieved the number-one position in the ranking of the world's most powerful supercomputers. The IBM computer built for the "roadrunner project" at Los Alamos National Lab—the first in the world to operate at speeds faster than one quadrillion calculations per second (petaflop)—remains the world speed champion.

With the newest version of Lotus Symphony, IBM's free of charge productivity software suite, IBM is providing support for Microsoft Office 2007, enabling organizations to now import Microsoft Office 2007 files into Symphony. The new support will enable Microsoft Office customers to save on licensing costs by switching to Symphony while retaining access to, and use of, the contents of their Office files. In addition, Symphony is shipped with every copy of Lotus Notes and Lotus Foundations software.

Large enterprises are continuing to increase their investments in Linux on the mainframe as part of their efforts to deliver more value to the business while controlling IT costs, according to a recent study of large enterprises commissioned by CA, which provides a solutions to help manage and secure z/VM and Linux environments on IBM's System z platform. The study was executed in order to understand the factors of use as well as the trends in IBM Mainframe Linux environments.

In December 2008, IBM and Canonical announced they were teaming with Virtual Bridges to provide the company's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure technology as part of a Microsoft-alternative desktop offering, and since then the partner network for Virtual Bridges offerings has more than doubled.

EnterpriseDB, an open source database vendor, announced that IBM has licensed its technology to make it easier to deploy applications on DB2 9.7, the upcoming release of IBM's enterprise relational database. The solution is intended to make it easier to migrate applications from Oracle environments into open source or DB2 environments. The technology is among a set of capabilities in EnterpriseDB's Postgres Plus Advanced Server. These capabilities enable customers to run applications written for Oracle Database.

Supporting its pledge to Linux and open source solutions, and in response to feedback and requests among its user community, IBM is re-launching the IBM LinuxLine, a newsletter delivering a concise report of Linux and open source news relevant for the enterprise. The IBM LinuxLine will be published every other week and is geared toward IT managers and the hands-on Linux community.
