IBM Power Systems were recently showcased at Strata + Hadoop World in New York City, where IBM showed how Power Systems provides the world's superior platform for Systems of Insight, driving digital business in a waitless world. At the event, Power Systems highlighted new capabilities for Spark and Hadoop on the world's first system designed for data.

A new line of IBM Power8-based Linux servers - the Power LC (Linux cluster) Line - has been launched. The new Power Systems LC servers are the first to be based on technologies and development efforts contributed by OpenPOWER Foundation partners - including Canonical, Mellanox, NVIDIA, Tyan and Wistron.

IBM and GENCI, the high performance computing agency in France, are collaborating to speed up the path to exascale computing - the ability of a computing system to perform at least one exaflop, or a billion billion calculations, in one second. The collaboration, planned to run for at least 18 months, focuses on readying complex scientific applications for systems under development expected to achieve more than 100 petaflops, a solid step forward on the path to exascale.

Syncsort, a big data software provider, has announced an open source contribution of an IBM z Systems mainframe connector for Apache Spark. According to the vendor, the contribution will enable organizations to easily access and get new insights from their critical mainframe data with Apache Spark's advanced analytics capabilities and Spark SQL.

IBM has announced general availability and improvements to a set of services for IBM's platform-as-a-service (PaaS), Bluemix, that enable developers to more seamlessly integrate Java-based resources into their cloud-based applications. The new IBM Cloud tools are designed to help developers broaden the capabilities of their applications to give users a more robust cloud experience, by leveraging added security and flexibility to use a vast array of resources for their development.

Coinciding with IBM's launch of LinuxONE, SUSE announced that SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is the first and currently only server operating system supported by the recently announced KVM for IBM z Systems, open source-based server virtualization for the IBM mainframe. SUSE was the first to bring Linux to the mainframe, collaborating with IBM since 1999 to make SUSE Linux Enterprise Server a guest operating system on IBM z Systems.

A key part of the mainframe code contributions are IT predictive analytics that constantly monitor for unusual system behavior and help prevent issues from turning into failures. The code can be used by developers to build similar sense and respond resiliency capabilities on other systems.
