Open source is fundamentally changing technology and redefining the tech industry, said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of The Linux Foundation, in his keynote at OpenStack Summit in Paris. On every layer of the technical stack, whether it is networking, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, or web frameworks, he noted, there is a hot open source project that is defining that particular category. "If you don't have an external R&D org at your organization, you should start doing that right now," Zemlin told the audience. "The question to ask is: Are you ready for the next open source blockbuster?"

IBM has introduced a new range of systems that can handle massive amounts of computational data faster at nearly 20% better price/performance than comparable Intel Xeon v3 Processor-based systems. "Our open innovation business model and approach to OpenPOWER will disrupt technology providers that offer closed, proprietary solutions produced within the walls of one company," said Doug Balog, General Manager, Power Systems, IBM Systems & Technology Group. SUSE and MariaDB Corporation (formerly SkySQL) have formed a partnership that expands the Linux application ecosystem on IBM Power Systems. Customers can now run a wider variety of applications on POWER8, increasing their flexibility and choice while working within their existing IT infrastructure. Mayo Clinic and IBM are planning to use a specially designed version of Watson, the IBM's Linux-powered cognitive computer, to match patients more quickly with appropriate clinical trials. A proof-of-concept phase is currently underway, with the intent to introduce it into clinical use in early 2015.

A new IBM research report provides a performance comparison of virtual machines, specifically KVM, and Linux containers, specifically Docker. As expected, Linux containers offer less overhead than full virtualization with KVM, but the difference is surprisingly small in many cases especially for CPU and memory-intensive workloads.
