The White House has announced the launch of the COVID-19 High Performance Computing Consortium to provide COVID-19 researchers worldwide with access to the world's most powerful high performance computing resources that can significantly advance the pace of scientific discovery in the fight to stop the virus. The public-private consortium, spearheaded by the White House, the U.S. Department of Energy, and IBM, includes government, industry, and academic leaders who have volunteered free compute time and resources on their machines.

Dremio, the data lake engine company, is closing on $70 million in Series C funding, enabling the company to fuel its growth and expand its products. The round was led by new investor Insight Partners, with participation from existing investors Cisco Investments, Lightspeed Venture Partners,  Norwest Venture Partners and Redpoint Ventures. Teddie Wardi, managing director, Insight Partners will also join the Dremio Board of Directors.

Quantum computing continues to captivate imaginations. The technology takes advantage of quantum mechanics to deliver exponentially faster speeds by being able to process an almost infinite amount of parallel compute threads delivered as qubits and quantum gates. As Jim Clarke, director of quantum hardware for Intel Labs, describes it, "by harnessing quantum mechanics, quantum computing systems promise an unprecedented ability to simulate and analyze natural phenomena, significantly accelerating the ability to process information and answer questions that would require prohibitive amounts of time even for today's supercomputers."

Hazelcast, an open source in-memory computing platform, has announced an additional $28.5 million in funding, bringing its total Series D round to $50 million. Hazelcast raised an initial $21.5 million in Series D funding in June but, given the interest from the investor community, the company said, it expanded the round.

Although it can be challenging for enterprises to try and maintain this pace of innovation, they have plenty of tools available to make it possible, including augmented analytics, which aims to capitalize on the large quantity of data. Gartner predicts that this next wave of analytics, which integrates AI and machine learning technologies into analytics workflows, will be a big disruption in the coming years.
