To meet the rapidly growing demand for its AI and cloud services in Spain, Oracle announced plans to invest more than $1 billion to open a third cloud region in Madrid and drive AI skills development across the country. Substrate Labs, an AI infrastructure startup, has received $8 million in a seed round to deliver elegant APIs that enable developers to build more modular AI systems and accelerate a new era of software development. The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from South Park Commons, Craft Ventures, Guillermo Rauch (Vercel), Immad Akhund (Mercury), Will Gaybrick (Stripe), and others. Led by co-founder and CEO Rob Cheung and co-founder Ben Guo, the company also announced the official launch of its API optimized for running ensembles of models.

You may also get bit of a diatribe about why speaking of AI in the royal sense (i.e., "the AI") is always a bad idea. It's practically a (bad) party trick. Yet recently, when asked to characterize the primary ethical issues in AI, I had a perfect moment of mental blankness. It was an uncomfortable and instructive moment on many fronts.
