To kick off Oracle Open World 2015, Oracle's annual user conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CTO and executive chairman Larry Ellison detailed the steps that led Oracle be positioned in "every layer of the cloud." Ellison outlined the top design goals for the company in all three layers of the cloud - SaaS, PaaS and IaaS. These are cost, reliability, performance, standards, compatibility - as well as security, which he said is increasingly becoming a more critical concern.

Until the safe harbor agreement between U.S. and Europe was ruled invalid recently in a European court, it was understood that for any European company the U.S. was safe, and the data security in the U.S. was acceptable. But the recent ruling by the European Court of Justice says that is "actually not true," said Andreas Gauger, chief marketing officer and cofounder of Profitbricks, a cloud computing IaaS company. Now, a new agreement will have to be forged between the different entities. "Now that band-aid has been ripped off and the wound is open. Now they have to sit down and finally agree on something."

With the current rate of data growth, it is not inconceivable that in 3 years, we'll have 10 times the volume of data we have today. The challenge will only continue to grow, but by following the five C's of data visualization, it is possible to prepare data and present eye-opening data visualization to improve users' reporting, analytics, and overall business intelligence.

Oracle today announced the general availability of MySQL 5.7, the latest version of the open source database. According to Tomas Ulin, vice president, MySQL Engineering, Oracle, the new version delivers greater performance, scalability, manageability, plus enhanced NoSQL capabilities with JSON support and MySQL Router, which makes it easy to connect applications to multiple MySQL databases.

The topics of resilience and change have been on my mind a lot lately for a variety of reasons. First, IT is always at the center of technology change, so that's nothing new. We must continually learn and keep abreast of new technology and trends before they even materialize. Second, I am an IT leader in the energy industry, and when one is at the mercy of natural resource supply and demand, there will be peaks and valleys in production and financial performance over the years. With this latest dip in energy prices, I sense a different perspective—one of working smarter and more efficiently, emphasizing innovation, and analyzing decisions with an enterprise perspective of what is right for the company at this time, not just IT.

In what is being hailed as the biggest tech merger ever, Dell Inc. and EMC Corp. today formally announced they have signed a definitive agreement under which Dell will acquire EMC. The total transaction is valued at $67 billion. The deal is expected to close in the second or third quarter of Dell's fiscal year which ends February 3, 2017 (within the months of May to October 2016). The industry is going through a "tremendous transformation," with the old style of IT being "pretty quickly disrupted" yet this rapid change is also presenting "incredibly rich" opportunities, said Joe Tucci, chairman and chief executive officer of EMC, during a conference call with media and industry analysts.

Prior to SQL Server 2016, currently in CTP, your main method for encrypting a SQL Server application was to use a feature called Transparent Data Encryption. TDE provides strong encryption, but with some shortcomings. First, you have to encrypt an entire database. No granularity is offered at a lower level, such as encrypting specific tables or certain data within a table. Second, TDE encrypts only data at rest, in files. Data in memory or in-flight between the application and server are unencrypted. Enter Always Encrypted.

Too little emphasis overall is placed on the integrity and recoverability of the data—and too much is placed on performance. Yes, performance is probably the most visible aspect of database systems, at least from the perspective of the end user. But the underlying assumption of the end user is always that they want to access accurate and, usually, up-to-date data. But what good does it do to quickly access the wrong data? Anybody can provide rapid access to the wrong data!

Traditional data warehousing models and open source alternatives such as Apache Hadoop and Storm have been touted as solutions to a variety of "big data" challenges. However, utilities have found that these approaches cannot handle the scale and complexity of data generated in industrial environments. Additionally, they fail to provide the real-time analysis and situational awareness that utilities need to improve decision making or address critical events in real-time, such as optimizing crews during outages and severe weather events.

There are various terms being bandied about that describe the new world data centers are entering—from the "third platform" to the "digital enterprise" to the "always-on" organization. Whatever the terminology, it's clear there is a monumental shift underway. Ricoh Company, Ltd, the printing and document management company, is using Oracle's SPARC T5 servers with Oracle ZFS Storage Appliances and Oracle Database to analyze data from RICOH @Remote, its real-time support service for customers in more than 100 countries and regions. To unify the data across the company for accurate views and analysis, Ricoh built a private cloud accessible by the entire remote service group that allows high speed access from internal networks.

Shortly after the explosion of non-relational databases, around 2009, it became apparent that rather than being part of the problem, SQL would instead continue to be part of the solution. If the new wave of database systems excluded the vast population of SQL-literate professionals, then their uptake in the business world would be impeded. Furthermore, a whole generation of business intelligence tools use SQL as the common way of translating user information requests into database queries. Nowhere was the drive toward SQL adoption more clear than in the case of Hadoop.

SolarWinds, a provider of hybrid IT infrastructure management platforms, is adding support for MySQL databases to SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer (DPA) 10.0. "DPA allows you to quickly pinpoint what is slowing down your database and applications and you can find problems that are usually very hard to find within your database," said Gerardo Dada, vice president of product marketing at SolarWinds.

There are fundamental differences in priorities and approaches in building operational solutions and in constructing analytical supporting solutions. However, these differences can produce a gap in understanding that occasionally results in minor battles and skirmishes between these groups along the path of getting work done. A critical area of conflict is access to production data. When building an operationally focused solution such as a website, the application is supreme.

Whatever the reason, database administrators (DBAs) frequently sit in a corner alone, siloed from the rest of IT, with their potential for impact ignored. Organizations in which this happens—which is most companies—are typically characterized by an attitude that the role of the DBA is to simply keep things running. The order from the top is "Just make sure the database doesn't break anything, OK?" This is a missed opportunity and a waste of a very valuable resource that hampers IT organizations everywhere.
