Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

Since the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) took effect in May 2018, organizations have  hopefully already emerged from the strategy phase and are now well into implementation. However, the nuances of GDPR are something most of us are still trying to comprehend—and we probably won't truly understand all of it for a while. In the hustle to reach compliance, errors will likely have been made. In the process of GDPR planning and execution, there are four key areas that companies need to be wary of. If not managed carefully, they can slow down the process of achieving, and maintaining, compliance goals.

It may seem strange to see MongoDB expanding the very features of the relational databases that it originally rejected. In the last few releases, we've seen implementation of joins, strict schemas, and now ACID transactions. However, what this indicates is that MongoDB is increasingly contending for serious enterprise database workloads: MongoDB is expanding the scope of its ambitions.

Whether you're an Oracle system or database administrator, an IT manager, or executive, or even just an end user or customer, security should be as important to you as almost anything else. We all hear about breaches in the news all too often. From the executive level to the end customer, none of us want to be anywhere near such a breach.

Under usual circumstances, the one-to-many or many-to-many relationship, alone, drives the pattern used within the database model. Certainly, the logical database model should represent the proper business semantics of the situation. But on the physical side, there may exist extenuating circumstances that would cause a data modeler to consider including an associative table construct for a one-to-many relationship.

Blockchain has been one of the most loudly trumpeted new technologies on the enterprise database scene in recent history. However, the concept of a blockchain is not really a new notion. Although security is often related to privacy, they are not synonymous. Data security can be defined as the set of policies and techniques to ensure the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of data at all times. Data privacy refers to the fact that the parties accessing and using the data do so only in ways that comply with the agreed-upon purposes of data use in their roles. These purposes can be expressed as part of a company's policy, but are also subject to legislation. In this way, several aspects of security can be considered as necessary instruments to guarantee data privacy.

Enterprise architects are making major waves. In fact, a recent KPMG study spotlighted enterprise architecture (EA) as today's most in-demand tech skill, as companies recognize EA's critical role in cutting both costs and complexities. But while enterprise architecture is one of the fastest-growing skillsets, it's also undergoing a major evolution. Where the role previously involved exhaustive plans consisting of excessive amounts of analysis, slow timelines, and rigid conceptual models, the agility and DevOps movement has forced old EA mentalities into obsolescence.

Organizations worldwide are grappling with the requirements of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and it's no secret that finding ways to remain compliant has become one of the most visible challenges, and one that has dominated the conversation. What's more pertinent; however, is the root of the problem: outdated systems which organizations use to track and understand where their data lives. This has grown more difficult day-by-day, as the amount of data collected by organizations grows exponentially. GDPR is a good forcing function to spur them to dig into this problem before it gets worse.

The relational optimizer is a very complex component of the RDBMS that we too often take for granted. The optimization techniques of the major RDBMS products continue to be improved with every new release, too. Relational optimization has saved countless hours of work and, as long as we use it properly and code our applications with knowledge of what optimization can do, the RDBMS can be used for a wide variety of requirements and use cases. Don't lose sight of that as you wend your way through the hype out there regarding new types of database systems.

For organizations with important applications, such as SQL Server running in virtual infrastructures, these IT teams are no strangers to the IT war room environment. In this case, input from the SQL Server system administrators and DBAs isn't considered (or even requested) when the infrastructure team implements it virtualization plan.
