In the past, user groups were the place where you would meet people interested in the same thing you were. Vendors worked with the user groups to communicate new releases, and gather feedback on beta testing and leveraged them as a source for new features. The user group had a library of information, presentations, events, and ways to interact with other users and vendors. Now, with social tools, including Facebook, Slack, and LinkedIn, and powerful search engines such as Google and Bing, the question is: Are user groups still needed? They are, and here is why.

Of all modern languages, JavaScript has one of the most fascinating backstories. During the early days of the web, Netscape hired Brendan Eich to create a prototype "glue language" that could be used in conjunction with HTML to increase the interactivity of webpages. The gist of the keynote was autopilot flies better than humans, autonomous cars will be safer, so why would we not do the same for our databases (remove the human error)? NVIDIA announced in a blog post recently that Oracle is using NVIDIA's Tesla GPU accelerators for its public cloud. Oracle's cloud customers can access NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU accelerators, starting today, and Oracle will expand its cloud offerings to include the Tesla V100 GPUs, which are based on the NVIDIA Volta architecture.

IBM announced revenue of $19.2 billion for the third quarter of 2017, up 11%. The company also announced "strategic imperatives"—from cloud and analytics—revenue of $34.9 billion over the trailing 12 months, up 10%. These imperatives represent 45% of IBM revenue.

GDPR is still months away from going into effect but many professionals in the data security space are warning customers to act now to avoid pain later. Technology-wise, an individual's right to be forgotten may be one of the most vexing issues related to the new EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which goes into effect in May, 2018, notes Pete Zimmerman, VP of client services and operations at Sonian, a public cloud information archiving company.
