Moving infrastructure, databases, or software into the cloud is no longer a bleeding edge decision. Many organizations have implemented this successfully with great benefits, and more continue to do so. It was not that long ago that we started learning about cloud technologies and capabilities. Technologists listened to webinars and read about the possibilities of such a paradigm shift with cynicism. It sounded great, but what about the practicalities, cost, and risk? The only organizations that seemed to embrace this new landscape were technology companies, while the rest of us stood on the sidelines watching and, on occasion, snickering. We thought nothing would ever replace our data centers. It appears we were wrong … it's time to embrace the paradigm shift.

Couchbase today announced general availability of Couchbase Server 4.1. The new release adds full CRUD support, in addition to covering indexes and prepared statements to improve the speed of complex queries, and expands platform support to further accelerate the adoption of Couchbase by large enterprises and the developer community. The new release makes it easier for developers to build agile enterprise applications on a NoSQL database that has the architecture to operate at any scale, according to Ravi Mayuram, senior vice president, products and engineering, Couchbase.

In addition to StretchDB and AlwaysEncrypted, there are two more exciting features in the works for SQL Server 2016: dynamic data masking and row-level security. As a DBA, establishing a reasonable backup schedule for your databases can be a challenging project. It requires you to balance two competing demands: the need to take image copy backups frequently enough to assure reasonable recovery time, and the need to not interrupt daily business. The DBA must be capable of balancing these two objectives based on usage criteria and the capabilities of the DBMS.

There's no question that the pace of data movement has quickened dramatically in recent years. This calls for new strategies for integrating data at the speed of business. That is the challenge as companies increasingly rely on data analytics in their decision making. In a new survey, a majority of managers and professionals (57%) state their business leaders now rely heavily on analytics in their day-to-day decision making. The survey, covering 303 data managers and professionals and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., finds that organizations are employing a range of new strategies and approaches to improve the speed of data delivery and integration. The survey, among members of the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG), and sponsored by Oracle, included respondents from organizations of all sizes and across various industries.

Splice Machine is releasing a new update to its relational database platform that will combine the power and flexibility of Hadoop and Spark. "Our version 2.0 takes our first version which scaled out on the Hadoop stack. Now, we are adding a new computation engine on HBase which is Spark," said Monte Zweben, co-founder and CEO of Splice Machine. Oracle has announced that the new Oracle Exadata Database Machine X5-8, the latest in the X5 family of engineered systems which integrate hardware and software, is now available. The new Exadata X5-8 offers up to 576 CPU cores, more than 1.3 petabytes of disk storage or 180 terabytes of PCIe flash, and up to 24 terabytes of memory. The Oracle Exadata X5-8 is the new companion model to Oracle Exadata X5-2 and incorporates the same storage and networking capabilities of Oracle Exadata X5-2, which was announced in January 2015.

To kick off Oracle Open World 2015, Oracle's annual user conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CTO and executive chairman Larry Ellison detailed the steps that led Oracle be positioned in "every layer of the cloud." Ellison outlined the top design goals for the company in all three layers of the cloud - SaaS, PaaS and IaaS. These are cost, reliability, performance, standards, compatibility - as well as security, which he said is increasingly becoming a more critical concern.

MongoDB is releasing an enhanced version of its platform, giving the company the opportunity to expand its capabilities to more users. "We're opening up MongoDB to a bigger audience in the enterprise, which is to say that traditionally the people that have used MongoDB were developers building modern applications and, with this release, we are building specific tools and capabilities targeted at data scientists, business analysts, and the C suite in terms of integration to business intelligence and visualization tools," said Kelly Stirman, vice president of strategy and product marketing at MongoDB. Until the safe harbor agreement between U.S. and Europe was ruled invalid recently in a European court, it was understood that for any European company the U.S. was safe, and the data security in the U.S. was acceptable. But the recent ruling by the European Court of Justice says that is "actually not true," said Andreas Gauger, chief marketing officer and cofounder of Profitbricks, a cloud computing IaaS company. Now, a new agreement will have to be forged between the different entities. "Now that band-aid has been ripped off and the wound is open. Now they have to sit down and finally agree on something."
