Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

Microservices architecture is increasingly the technical strategy businesses are using as part of their current transformation projects—breaking down existing monolithic applications into self-contained, independently developed and deployed services. In fact, in a recent O'Reilly study of software engineers and technical professionals, more than three-fifths (61%) of respondents have been using microservices for a year or more. The same report found finance and banking lead the way in using microservices—but many other industries are following suit, including retail/ecommerce, telecom, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, and more.

Operational databases continue to expand, with database sizes growing in most organizations. In terms of performance, the more data in the operational database, the less efficient transactions running against that database tend to be. The other impact, database administration complexity, causes longer processing time and outages to perform traditional DBA tasks. But as important as operational performance and administration issues are, frequently they are ancillary to the regulatory issue of preserving authentic data over time.

The volume, velocity and veracity of today's data deluge has put immense pressure on underlying data platforms and organizations' abilities to manage them effectively. And the pandemic has only exacerbated the problem. According to a 2021 survey, nearly half of digital architects are under high or extremely high pressure to deliver digital projects, but 61% blame legacy technology for making it difficult to complete modernization efforts. That said, databases of all types—SQL, NoSQL, or NewSQL—be they on-prem, cloud, hybrid, or edge, are struggling to navigate this new reality.

The value of normalization is in understanding the data well enough to create the normalized design. Pulling out the business rules, business terms, and relationships from the mass of jumbled together raw content is critical. The business rules that result from performing the normalization exercise establish the requirements that need to be satisfied by solutions, whether they are either built or purchased. When an organization creates and maintains a normalized design for the data within the important areas of their business, they reduce work on all future systems.

Your database environment is getting more complex. If that sounds like old hat, that's because it is.For years, articles like this have warned of the dangers of increasingly convoluted database environments. They've discussed how Database Administrators (DBAs) are now tasked with managing thousands of databases and supporting technologies. They've lamented over increasing fragmentation and workflow-stymying bottlenecks, which have, among a whole list of things, significantly hampered developer velocity. And they've explained that opting for specialized databases and tools for every need can quickly spiral into vendor lock-in, swelling support contracts, and surrendered control over your data.

It is well known that a database is the fundamental building block for any data-based initiative. Databases are used when collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing data. A database is the silent component that drives business decisions and operational improvements or simply keeps track of inventory. As much as the database should be the almost invisible part of these processes, it is crucial to make the right choice. While it might look easy to select a suitable database, there are a few things to evaluate when making a decision.
