Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

Every few years we hear of one new idea or product that will surely bring death to the relational database, or death to the data warehouse, or death to something. It appears that many prefer to see death or at least they greatly enjoy planning for it. Often these finalities never seem to arrive.

MongoDB recently announced some interesting, though incremental, enhancements. These included improved "joins" in the aggregation framework, better document validation using JSON schema, and more reliable behavior in the event of network failures. These features attempt to close the gap between the functionality of MongoDB and traditional relational databases - joins, schemas, and commits. On top of these incremental updates, MongoDB announced a couple of features that intrude on functionality usually provided by application servers or desktop programs.

DBAs spend a lot of time on tuning application code and SQL statements to boost efficiency and optimize access. But SQL is only one aspect of database systems performance. It is also important for DBAs to devote time to tuning and optimizing the design, parameters, and physical construction of database objects, specifically tables and indexes, and the files in which their data is stored.

According to Penny Avril, vice president of product management, Oracle Database, the transition means that DBAs have the opportunity to move from being data custodians and keepers to taking on a more strategic role in their organizations. But, she says, the time to prepare for the new cloud reality is now.

The emergence of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology may prove to be almost as significant an innovation as the internet itself. Blockchain offers a mechanism for the mediation of any transactions that previously would have required trusted third parties, while cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin may eventually become a significant alternative to traditional "fiat" (e.g., government-backed) currencies. These technologies could eventually revolutionize the global banking infrastructure which has underpinned global commerce for centuries.

You may think your company is behind the curve because you are not 100% in the cloud. Very few companies are there, and most won't make it all the way to 100% due to security, performance, or other strategic reasons. Most, however, are at least getting some workloads into the cloud for price, scalability, and competitive advantage. If you are just starting your journey, here are a few things to consider.

Referential integrity (RI) is a method for ensuring the "correctness" of data within a DBMS. People tend to oversimplify RI, stating that it is merely the identification of relationships between relational tables. It is actually much more than this. RI embodies the integrity and usability of a relationship by establishing rules that govern that relationship.

Poorly written SQL statements can cause significant performance problems in your database environment. According to some experts, poorly written SQL can cause up to 70% of performance problems overall. Adding resources can mask many issues surrounding poorly written SQL, but comes with a cost. Is writing good, quality SQL (including block code—stored procedures, packages, functions, etc.) a dying art? And if it's so important, why is that?

In today's always-on economy, database downtime can inflict a mortal wound on the life of a business. That's why having a trusted backup solution that can ensure that databases can be back up and running quickly in the event of an outage is critical. Today, close to one-fourth of organizations have SLAs of four nines of availability or greater, meaning they require less than 52 minutes of downtime per year, according to a recent Unisphere Research survey.

If data is the new oil, then getting that resource pumped out to more users faster with fewer bottlenecks is a capability that must be achieved. As data stores grow larger and more diverse, and greater focus is placed on competing on analytics, processing data faster is becoming a critical requirement. In-memory technology has become a relied-upon part of the data world, now available through most major database vendors. In-memory can process workloads up to 100 times faster than disk-to-memory configurations, which enables business at the speed of thought.

Addressing the need to store and manage increasingly large amounts of data that does not fit neatly in rows and columns, NoSQL databases can run on commodity hardware, support the unstructured, non-relational data flowing into organizations from the proliferation of new sources, and are available in a variety of structures that open up new types of data sources, providing ways to tap into the institutional knowledge locked in PCs and departmental silos.

The rise of new data types is leading to new ways of thinking about data, and newer data storage and management technologies, such as Hadoop, Spark, and NoSQL, are disruptive forces that may eventually result in what has been described as a post-structured world. But while Hadoop and NoSQL are undoubtedly growing in use, and a wider array of database management technologies in general is being adopted, the reality is that at least for now the relational database management system is still reigns supreme and is responsible for storing the great majority of enterprise data.

Coined over a decade ago, the term "polyglot persistence" has come to be seen as a shorthand phrase in the database world for using the best tool for the job, or in other words, the right database for the data storage need at hand. Today, that might mean NoSQL, NewSQL, in-memory databases, and cloud databases—also known as database as a service—approaches.
