IBM Security has announced the results of a global study examining the financial impact of data breaches, revealing that these incidents cost the companies studied $3.86 million per breach on average, and that compromised employee accounts were the most expensive root cause. According to the study, stolen or compromised credentials and cloud misconfigurations were the most common causes of a malicious breach for companies in the report, representing nearly 40% of malicious incidents.

At Data Summit Connect 2020, Elliott Ning, cloud advisor, Google, discussed how AI has replaced business intelligence as the key driver of strategic decision-making. There are four categories of analytics use case, Ning explained. First is descriptive analytics, like aggregating business data during a period of time. For example, getting information about total revenue from last month, last quarter, or last year.

VMware announced the company intends to acquire Datrium, expanding the current VMware Site Recovery disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) offering with Datrium's cost-optimized DRaaS solution. In a blog post by John Gilmartin, senior vice president and general manager, cloud platform business unit, VMware, he explained that this move will help customers build hybrid clouds by combining the consistent infrastructure and operations of VMware Cloud with Datrium DRaaS to reduce the cost and complexity of business continuity.

Who would have imagined this reality when just 40 years ago, before the internet was mainstream, the only computing interface was conducted on a green-screen "dumb terminal" limited to display and data entry? Nevertheless, this current moment is the reality for only a fleeting period of time before a new, transformative—and disruptive—technological era begins.

According to Accenture's ninth annual Cost of Cybercrime study, the number of cyberattacks continues to rise and take more time to resolve. Organizations participating in the study saw an average of 145 attacks in 2018, up from 130 in 2017. The good news in the report was that prioritizing technologies to improve cybersecurity protection can reduce the consequences of attacks and "unlock future economic value as higher levels of trust encourage more business from customers."

One creates the potential for some interesting anomalies when building a star schema wherein the fact table contains future-dated metrics and any of the dimensions are Type 2. A Type 2 dimension tracks changes to the data items contained within it. Effectively, each dimension contains a surrogate key, a natural key with a start and stop date, and additional descriptor columns. If any of the descriptor column values change, the existing dimension row has the stop date populated while a new row is inserted with the same natural key, new start date, and new descriptor values.
