Whether you attended SHARE in Anaheim last week or not, most of us in enterprise IT can relate to Jason Dorsey's keynote "Crossing the Generational Divide: Leveraging the Power of Generations™ for Your Strategic Advantage." Jason is from the Center for Generational Kinetics and kicked off the five day event by sharing strategies and humorous anecdotes on balancing a workforce made up of four generations working side by side. An impromptu poll found that about half of the audience was Baby Boomers, which Jason defines as people born between 1946 and 1964. Gen X - people born between 1965 and 1976 and Gen Y - people born between 1977 and 1995 also had a strong presence. There were also about a dozen Traditionalists - the generation born before 1946 in the audience.

75% of organizations are not collecting data from their social media networks. That is the top-line finding of a new Unisphere Research study which was presented at the 2012 SHARE ExecuForum, March 12-13 in conjunction with SHARE in Atlanta last week. A deeper look reveals that this does not signal a bleak day for social media data collection. While adoption rates for measurement of social media networks appear low today, organizations plan to begin monitoring and analyzing this data over the next one to five years. Planned investments in this area continue to trend upward each year. This trend signals that the social media business intelligence market is still in an "early adopter" phase, but is rapidly growing in relevance.

As an information technology (IT) research analyst, I receive regular invites to industry events (because the event sponsors hope that I will share their stories with a broader audience). But my motivation for attending these events is to conduct information technology research. I have no qualms about approaching IT professionals whom I don't know (including teachers, students, IT practitioners, IT executives and vendors) and asking their opinions of various technologies, products and industry trends. And a high percentage of these individuals are usually willing to share their opinions (as long as I don't mention their organizations in my research). One of my favorite events to attend is the SHARE user group meeting held twice a year at various locations in the United States. And the reason I enjoy this meeting so much is that a large number of seasoned IT professionals attend and speak at this event. These people are easy to approach, very knowledgeable and very candid.

By Steve Guendert, Ph.D,SHARE Deputy DirectorWithout a doubt, Cloud Computing is the hottest topic in information technology today. At the October Gartner Symposium/ITxpo held in Orlando, FL, Gartner identified Cloud Computing as the #1 (of 10) strategic technology for 2011. Gartner specifically stated "Cloud computing services exist along a spectrum from open public to closed private. The next three years will see the delivery of a range of cloud service approaches that fall between these two extremes. Vendors will offer packaged private cloud implementations that deliver the vendor's public cloud service technologies (software and/or hardware) and methodologies (i.e., best practices to build and run the service) in a form that can be implemented inside the consumer's enterprise. Many will also offer management services to remotely manage the cloud service implementation."
