If you are an old hand at Microsoft SQL Server, you have probably used the SQL Server Agent (i.e., SQL Agent) service and MSDB database for the last 20 years. With a humble and largely unchanged feature set since it was first introduced, SQL Agent is one of those incredibly useful and cost-saving features we have come to expect from the Microsoft Data Platform. However, SQL Agent faces one important shortcoming: It can run on Azure VMs and on Azure SQL Managed Instances, but it is not available on Azure SQL Database. As a result, we need a substitute.

Micro Focus has announced the release of its ITOM "Collect Once Store Once" (COSO) Data Lake utilizing an open access data platform built on Vertica to drive full-stack AIOps across the broad set of Micro Focus monitoring and automation solutions. According to Micro Focus, with the new ITOM COSO Data Lake, users that have multiple Micro Focus ITOM products, such as Operations Bridge, Network Operations Management, and Data Center Automation, will be able to quickly access data for both dashboards and historical reporting from the same data store.

Oracle has announced the availability of the first of two planned second-generation cloud regions in the UAE. The addition of the Dubai cloud region marks the availability of 26 Oracle cloud regions worldwide. The opening is part of Oracle's plan to have 36 cloud regions by July 2021.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is releasing Amazon Timestream, a new time series database for IoT and operational applications that can scale to process trillions of time series events per day. According to AWS, Amazon Timestream saves customers effort and expense by keeping recent data in-memory and moving historical data to a cost-optimized storage tier based upon user-defined policies, while its query processing gives customers the ability to access and combine recent and historical data transparently across tiers with a single query, without needing to specify explicitly in the query whether the data resides in the in-memory or cost-optimized tier.
