Well, it can be a lot of things, so make sure that you examine any "platform" your organization is considering very carefully. A data platform might comprise a DBMS, and it might not. It might be a tool to help you collect and analyze large data sets from various sources. It might be a series of analytics tools and interfaces for accessing data. Or it might be any one, or set of, offerings that manage, virtualize, index, secure, or otherwise work with your data.

According to BMC's 2018 mainframe report, 93% of executives continue to believe in the long-term viability of the platform; 92% predict long-term viability (third straight year of increases, highest level since 2013); and 63% of respondents were under age 50, up 10 percentage points from 2017. MongoDB recently released the beta offering of its native data visualization tool, MongoDB Charts, on its cloud database-as-a-service, MongoDB Atlas, which runs on runs on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. According to the vendor, the new feature allows users to quickly create data visualizations and share them with their teams with no code to write, no tools to configure and no data movement or duplication.

Import.io has closed a $15.5 million Series B funding round to accelerate global growth and expand its product offerings to meet the growing needs of enterprises. Import.io's solution is aimed at improving the data prep/analysis time ratio for data professionals. Current industry estimates say roughly 75-80% of their time is spent gathering and cleaning data with the rest left for analysis.

Looker closed a Series E financing round of $103 million that will continue to help boost the company and upcoming innovations. This latest funding round is being led by Premji Invest, with new investment from Cross Creek Advisors and participation from Looker's current investors.  Looker has raised a total of $280.5 million since 2013.
