MapR Technologies, Inc., a provider of a distribution for Apache Hadoop, is including Apache Drill 1.0 in the MapR Distribution. Drill is a schema-free SQL query engine for Hadoop, NoSQL, and cloud storage. According to MapR, the partner ecosystem is embracing Apache Drill, and a range of companies, including SAP, are working closely with MapR and the Drill community to interoperate BI tools with Drill through standard ODBC/JDBC connectivity.

Syncsort is partnering with Dell and Cloudera to release a joint solution that will help enterprises reduce costs and improve business analytics. The partnership will create a Dell-Syncsort architecture that will combine Syncsort's Hadoop extract-transform-load tool, DMX-h, with Cloudera's Enterprise Data Hub, enabling customers to offload targeted ETL workloads and data from data warehouses to Cloudera's platform, increasing performance and freeing up valuable cycles in the EDW.

Oracle announced more than two dozen new PaaS and IaaS services spanning database, Java, integration, analytics, compute, storage, and networking services. "We are now prepared to call our platform and our infrastructure services complete," said Oracle executive chairman of the board and CTO Larry Ellison during the launch event. A key tenet of Oracle's cloud strategy, said Ellison is to offer the same technology on-premise and in the cloud "so you can easily move your data and applications back and forth."

IBM announced an initiative that enables business partners, application developers and university students to conduct innovation, development and learning for the OpenPOWER ecosystem. SuperVessel, an open access cloud service created by Beijing's IBM Research and IBM Systems Labs, is now available to the global community of developers who want to participate in the OpenPOWER ecosystem. The cloud acts as a virtual R&D engine for the creation, testing and pilot of emerging applications including deep analytics, machine learning and the Internet of Things.

Attivio, which calls itself the data dexterity company, is releasing Attivio 5, the next generation of its software platform. This new solution aims to solve major issues for business intelligence by offering self-service data discovery acceleration capabilities. "We want to help companies get the data that they need to make decisions at scale and do it more comprehensibly through a self-service interface so they don't need to hire technical resources," said Stephen Baker, CEO of Attivio.

JethroData has closed an $8.1 million Series B financing round led by Square Peg Capital, and including existing investor Pitango Venture Capital. This funding round comes on the heels of the general availability of JethroData's SQL-on-Hadoop software, which uses indexes to query data up to 100 times faster than alternative SQL on Hadoop solutions.

Rackspace is launching a dedicated option for MongoDB customers called ObjectRocket for MongoDB databases. The solution, which combines the speed and scalability of the ObjectRocket platform with dedicated hardware and networking for compliance-dependent use cases is aimed at providing the the performance, security and compliance required in high-risk industries such as healthcare, financial services and insurance. "Today we're announcing a fully dedicated cabinet solution to provide a high level of isolation for our customers," said Chris Lalonde, co-founder of ObjectRocket. "On top of that, we are also announcing an on disk encryption for MongoDB."

IBM is acquiring Blue Box Group to simplify the running of private clouds using OpenStack-based solutions. Blue Box is a privately held company based in Seattle that provides businesses with a private cloud as a service platform based on OpenStack. IBM says the addition will help businesses integrate their cloud-based applications and on-premises systems into OpenStack-based managed cloud. Additionally, Blue Box strengthens IBM Cloud's existing OpenStack portfolio with the introduction of a remotely managed OpenStack offering. This offering provides clients with a local cloud and increased visibility, control and security.

According to Hitachi, Pentaho will retain its existing brand and continue to operate independently as "Pentaho, a Hitachi Data Systems company" under the leadership of its CEO, Quentin Gallivan, who will now report to Kevin Eggleston, senior vice president of Social Innovation at HDS.
