It's no secret that data management has changed dramatically in the nearly 10 years since the onslaught of "big data." A decade ago, the relational database management system (RDBMS) ruled the enterprise.  Today, polyglot persistence is the mandate, and innovative NoSQL and NewSQL databases, cloud services, and data processing technologies have arisen alongside stalwart RDBMSs, data warehouses, and traditional on-premise deployments. However, despite the increasingly challenging data environment, experts agree, opportunities for DBAs abound—provided they are willing to continue learning and growing and to step in to fill gaps where they open up.

"Citizen developers"—those business users outside of the IT department who design or build their own applications—are more than a small band of rebels. A majority of organizations now rely on non-IT developers for at least some of their mission-critical applications. Few companies discourage such activity, and many are benefiting from the faster pace of software releases with which citizen developers play a part.

Far too often, business users seem consumed by the systems they handle. This makes them unable to define the necessary business processes or needs of the organization. All these users can do is describe what their off-the-shelf packages provide for them. In fact, most users take great pride in their "understanding" of the current system.

Don't let the term "unstructured data" confuse you. Structure exists, somehow and somewhere, within unstructured source data. It is that subtle, possibly even encrypted, structure that contains the gems of knowledge that an enterprise seeks. Sometimes those gems only shine when extracted and combined with other little gems from other data sources.

No, we weren't born in a crossfire hurricane, nor schooled with a strap right across our backs; we have other crises, mixed priorities, and resourcing deficiencies to cope with. But it's all right now. In fact, it's a gas. There is little choice for those who wish to survive in the IT trade. Either one copes with an ever-changing landscape, or one moves on to another industry. Technology shops across the nation, if not across the world, are in themidst of a crisis. The only problem is that this crisis has gone on for a couple of decades or more.

Of all modern languages, JavaScript has one of the most fascinating backstories. During the early days of the web, Netscape hired Brendan Eich to create a prototype "glue language" that could be used in conjunction with HTML to increase the interactivity of webpages. The prototype was thrown together in just 10 days and named JavaScript. However, JavaScript owes very little to Java—it is often said that JavaScript is to Java as hamburger is to ham.

Leadership in IT can be very dynamic.  At one time or another it seems anyone may be impressed into a leadership role. The data people (DBAs, data architects, data modelers), often end up considered as unofficial leaders (largely because they are the smarter ones on the team). A leader, whether official or unofficial, has some responsibilities.

There's a surprising trick for greatly increasing the chances of real impact, true success with many types of machine learning systems, and that is "do the logistics correctly and efficiently."   That sounds like simple advice - it is - but the impact can be enormous. If the logistics are not handled well, machine learning projects generally fail to deliver practical value. In fact, they may fail to deliver at all. But carrying out this advice may not seem simple at all.
