Data Modeling Articles

How rapidly digital transformations have occurred since 2007. A decade ago organizations had not yet turned en masse to leverage social platforms such as Facebook. Consumer technology and its potential went largely ignored and companies were mainly focused on data mining, search technology, and virtual collaboration. Surely it is time for a new generation of intelligent data modeling to step up and enable advertisers and marketers to target consumers more accurately.

Every few years we hear of one new idea or product that will surely bring death to the relational database, or death to the data warehouse, or death to something. It appears that many prefer to see death or at least they greatly enjoy planning for it. Often these finalities never seem to arrive.

DBAs spend a lot of time on tuning application code and SQL statements to boost efficiency and optimize access. But SQL is only one aspect of database systems performance. It is also important for DBAs to devote time to tuning and optimizing the design, parameters, and physical construction of database objects, specifically tables and indexes, and the files in which their data is stored.

There is an old joke that a tourist in New York City is lost while sightseeing and notices a musician leaving a taxi; he walks up to the musician and asks, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" The musician responds, "Practice, practice, practice." Obviously, such jokes are doomed to obscurity as people now will simply use the navigation app on their phone. However, the advice itself, in its own way, will always be relevant—practice, practice, practice.

For everyone normalizing their designs, just remember: There ain't no such thing as a partial foreign key. When a project pretends that partial foreign keys are a valid concept, the end result is a database model that either lies to viewers, or does not give them the necessary information to readily join tables together.

Gone are the days of 2-year software development projects. Now organizations are striving for code updates that drop monthly, weekly, even daily. A developer will say, "I need a workable copy of Oracle today." And IT responds, "OK, we'll have that in about 2 weeks." What's a developer to do? Sometimes this leads to the use of synthetic datasets (one might also refer to this simply as "fake data"). These never work as well as real data, and the result is more bugs and slower software development. Other times the Dev/Test side of the house will expense spinning up a bunch of systems in the cloud, so-called "shadow IT."

Choices are pervasive when designing a database. The data modeler must progress through a series of issues: What ideas are important? Which objects stand out? Which concepts can take a back seat? Adding to all those decisions comes understanding the target structures one is shooting at. A normalized design may lean one way, while a dimensional design may lean another.
