Microsoft announced it has begun migrating its internal SAP systems to S/4HANA under the RISE with SAP umbrella, making SAP responsible for the licensing, technical management, hosting, and support of its SAP applications under a single SLA. The migration to S/4HANA will serve a dual purpose for Microsoft: modernizing its legacy SAP systems before the end of mainstream support in 2027 and demonstrating to customers that it is capable of hosting and running one of the largest and most complex SAP installations in the world within the RISE framework.

At AWS Summit San Francisco, AWS announced that Amazon Aurora Serverless v2 is generally available for both Aurora PostgreSQL and MySQL. Aurora Serverless is an on-demand, auto-scaling configuration for Amazon Aurora that allows a database to scale capacity up or down based on your application's needs.

Oracle has announced the availability of Oracle Exadata Cloud Infrastructure X9M. With Oracle Autonomous Database Service or Oracle Exadata Database Service running on Exadata Cloud Infrastructure X9M, customers can run existing workloads faster, with greater scale, and at a lower cost than previous generations. In addition, when upgrading from X8M to X9M, organizations can reduce costs by consolidating hundreds of OTLP, analytics, and mixed database workloads onto a single cloud service.

Software intelligence company Dynatrace has extended its advanced AIOps capabilities for leading database environments, including Oracle and Microsoft SQL. New out-of-the-box extensions enable DevOps teams and DBAs to automatically surface and proactively act on real-time answers about the relationship between their database infrastructure and applications. Dynatrace database observability for Oracle is generally available now. Support for Microsoft SQL Server will be generally available within 90 days, and support for additional database platforms will be announced later in 2022.

Oracle has announced that Oracle MySQL HeatWave now supports in-database machine learning (ML) in addition to the previously available transaction processing and analytics. MySQL HeatWave ML fully automates the ML lifecycle and stores all trained models inside the MySQL database, eliminating the need to move data or the model to a machine learning tool or service. Eliminating ETL reduces application complexity, lowers cost, and improves security of both the data and the model. HeatWave ML is included with the MySQL HeatWave database cloud service in all 37 Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) regions.

BMC has announced new capabilities and integrations across its BMC AMI (Automated Mainframe Intelligence) and BMC Compuware portfolios. According to IBM, Db2 13 for z/OS provides the ability to develop large-scale AI-insights through an innovative, database-integrated approach, infuse AI within any application to improve operations and reduce costs, and enhance resiliency, efficiency, and application stability for maximum availability. Availability is planned for May 31, 2022.

Database applications have vastly improved in recent years, but despite our best efforts, they can still feel frustratingly slow. A report that is supposed to take minutes might instead (for unknown reasons) take 2 hours. Corporate teams complain that every time they work with the database, it gums up the works, leaving users grumpy and managers suspicious. This is no small matter. According to the SolarWinds Query Report 2021, nearly one-third of data pros sur­veyed manage more than 300 databases in their organization's environment.
