Oracle is advancing the role of Java for IoT (Internet of Things) with the latest releases of its Oracle Java Embedded product portfolio - Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.3 and Oracle Java ME Software Development Kit (SDK) 3.3, a complete client Java runtime and toolkit optimized for microcontrollers and other resource-constrained devices. Oracle is also introducing the Oracle Java Platform Integrator program to provide partners with the ability to customize Oracle Java ME Embedded products to reach different device types and market segments. "We see IoT as the next big wave that will hit the industry," Oracle's Peter Utzschneider, vice president of product management, explained during a recent interview.

The latest version of Oracle's Exalytics In-Memory Machine, version X3-4, features significant software enhancements and hardware updates to improve the capabilities of the high-speed engineered system for business analytics. The new Exalytics X3-4 system doubles the amount of on-board RAM to 2TB, and features 2.4TB of flash storage, and 5.4TB of hard disk.

Oracle announced the 12c releases of Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF), Oracle JDeveloper, and Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse. Enhancing the productivity of developers and allowing them to better leverage the Oracle platform, the new releases support Cloud Application Foundation product family 12c releases - Oracle WebLogic Server 12.1.2 and Oracle Coherence 12.1.2.

Oracle has announced the latest 12c releases of its Cloud Application Foundation, which integrates application server and in-memory data grid capabilities into a foundation for cloud computing, representing "a major release of our middleware infrastructure," Mike Lehmann, Oracle vice president of product management, tells 5 Minute Briefing. Big data analytics provider Actian is putting assets from the recent acquisition of ParAccel, Pervasive Software and Versant Corporation to work. The company announced plans to offer two new platforms, the Actian DataCloud and ParAccel Big Data Analytics Platforms. The Actian DataCloud and ParAccel Big Data Analytics Platforms are designed to provide end-to-end capabilities, from data connection through preparation and analytics, all the way to automated action. Built on technology that takes advantage of advances in chips, cores and clusters, the company says the platforms provide clients with integration and analytics on any data.

We typically think of predictive analytics being used for providing business insight into opportunities such as upselling customers or detecting risk of fraud, but Patterns and Predictions, a predictive analytics company, is putting its technology to work for a higher purpose. The company is working on a big data initiative dubbed "The Durkheim Project" which is using its machine learning data fabric built on technologies from Attivio and Cloudera to predict suicide at scale.

SAP AG and Esri, a geographic information system (GIS) and location analytics provider, are joining forces to more deeply integrate GIS solutions with platforms and enterprise applications from SAP in order to improve business efficiency and decision-making. The ability to combine the added dimension of location information with enterprise data, in real time is aimed at giving businesses greater immediacy in their decision-making capabilities. "We are partnering with the leading GIS vendor in the marketplace, Esri, to provide much deeper integration. Terracotta, provider of in-memory technologies for enterprise big data, unveiled new versions of BigMemory 4, its flagship product for managing big, fast data, and Web Sessions 4, its solution for distributed in-memory session management. Together, the company says the new offerings enable faster, more reliable access to session data in large-scale, high-traffic web applications. According to Terracotta, BigMemory 4 offers 60% faster data access than previous versions at terabyte scale and beyond, and delivers enterprise-grade levels of reliability and flexibility that were formerly available only in traditional, disk-based data management systems.

28msec, Inc. announced the launch of the company and its first product, 28.io, which it calls an Information Processing Platform (IPP). Reducing the time to develop and run complex queries on SQL and NoSQL databases by an order of magnitude over existing solutions, the company says 28.io enables businesses to retrieve and process data from multiple formats (such as JSON, XML, HTML, relational data, CSV, and text), located in various data stores, including both SQL and NoSQL sources using one single language and platform.

Dell Software has introduced the latest version of the Dell KACE K1000 Management Appliance, which now includes integrated software asset management to boost software license compliance, while helping lower IT costs. SAP AG announced this week that version 16 of the company's Sybase software has achieved a Guinness World Record for loading and indexing big data. In cooperation with BMMsoft, HP and Red Hat, SAP Sybase IQ 16 achieved an audited result of 34.3 terabytes per hour, surpassing the previous record of 14 terabytes per hour achieved by the same team using an earlier version of SAP Sybase IQ. The latest version of th real-time analytics server and enterprise data warehouse (EDW) provides a new, fully parallel data loading capability and a next-generation column store, enabling the jump in big data performance.

SAP plans to acquire hybris, an e-commerce software company. SAP says the combination of its own enterprise solutions combined with e-commerce solutions from hybris will provide enterprises with the enhanced data and tools necessary to optimize margins and customer loyalty. Upon completion of the transaction, expected in the third quarter of 2013 and subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions, SAP says hybris will operate as an independent business unit and will retain its existing management team led by Ariel Ludi, CEO, and Carsten Thoma, president and co-founder, of hybris.

Composite Software has released the Composite Data Virtualization Platform 6.2 SP3. This release really has four elements, Robert Eve, executive vice president of marketing, Composite, tells 5 Minute Briefing. It updates the Hortonworks, Cloudera and the Apache Distribution of Hadoop big data integrations through the HiveServer2 interface, and then fourth, provides new access to Cloudera CDH through Impala. Cisco has announced its intent to acquire Composite Software, a privately held company specializing in data virtualization software and services. Headquartered in San Mateo, Calif., Composite provides data virtualization software that enables a simplified and optimized logical view of data from multiple sources across the network, giving applications and business users the ability to access and query all types of data as if it is in a single place. According to Cisco, the acquisition of Composite will expand its Smart Services portfolio and extend its services platform by optimizing data and connecting to the infrastructure layer, enhancing programmability and use of APIs for Cisco customers.

HP and SAP AG are making progress on a joint initiative, code-named "Project Kraken," to improve business processes and mitigate risks for customers. Unveiled last January, Project Kraken is a co-innovation effort between HP and SAP, built from years of HP server technology innovations and optimized with the in-memory SAP HANA database for SAP Business Suite. Dell Software's latest release of SharePlex, a data replication solution, has added support for near real-time data integration to drive improved data warehousing, business intelligence and analytics. SharePlex, which has a heritage as an Oracle-to-Oracle data replication solution, now enables customers to replicate Oracle data using CDC to other databases, including structured databases such as SQL Server, DB2, Sybase, Netezza, and Teradata, as well as emerging unstructured databases such as Hadoop and Greenplum.
